Jammu records season's coldest day

Residents of Jammu woke up to a chilly morning Tuesday as the night temperature had plunged to 4.1 degrees Celsius the season's lowest so far. Earlier on December 17, the city of temples had recorded a low of 4.4 degrees Celsius. The upward trend in the mercury marked a dip on Monday when the night temperature settled at 5.3 degrees Celsius, down from the previous night's 6.7 degrees Celsius, a Meteorological department (Met) spokesperson said. The night temperature is on a decline across the Jammu region, with the minimum temperature in Banihal and Batote, along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, and Bhaderwah, in Doda district, slipping to sub-zero levels, he said. Banihal, the gateway to Kashmir, was the coldest recorded place in the region with a low of minus 3.3 degrees Celsius, followed by Bhaderwah at minus 2.2 degrees Celsius and Batote at minus 2 degrees Celsius, the spokesman said. Cold wave intensifies in HP on Christmas as Manali reels at minus 3.2 deg C

The cove wave tightened its grip on Himchal Pradesh on Christmas, with the mercury plunging to minus 9.4 degrees Celsius in Keylong and popular tourist destination Manali reeling at minus 3.2 degrees Celsius from 5.30 pm on Monday to 8.30 am Tuesday. Kalpa, Solan, Bhuntar, Sundernagar and Seobagh also witnessed sub-zero temperatures during the period, Meteorological Centre, Shimla, Director Manmohan Singh said. Keylong, administrative centre of the tribal Lahaul and Spiti district, was the coldest place in the state, he said. The minimum temperature in Kalpa was recorded at minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, Seobagh at minus 1.7 degrees Celsius, Bhuntar at minus 1 degree Celsius, Sundernagar at minus 0.7 degree Celsius and Solan at minus 0.4 degree Celsius, Singh added. The minimum temperature in state capital Shimla was 1.7 degrees Celsius during the period. Similarly the minimum in Kufri remained at 0.8 degree Celsius and in Dalhousie, at 1.1 degrees Celsius, he said.

Cold wave conditions in Rajasthan

Cold wave conditions prevailed in some parts of Rajasthan despite a slight increase in night temperature, a MeT official said Monday. Cold conditions along with dense fog in Alwar and Sriganganagar districts reduced visibility, he added. Technical faults resulting from fog disrupted electricity supply in Sriganganagar and Hanumangarh districts, power department officials said. As per the MeT department, Sriganganagar recorded a minimum of 2.7 degrees Celsius, followed by 5.2 degrees Celsius in Churu, 5.5 degrees Celsius in Bikaner, 7.2 degrees Celsius in Udaipur, 7.5 degrees Celsius in Jaisalmer, 7.6 degrees Celsius in Kota, 9 degrees Celsius in Ajmer, 10 degrees Celsius in Barmer, 10.01 degrees Celsius in Jaipur and 11.2 degrees Celsius in Jodhpur. The Maximum temperature was recorded in between 17.5 and 26 degrees Celsius at most of the places in the state, it said. Odisha 11 places record temperature below 10 deg C

Cold weather conditions tightened its grip over Odisha Monday as the temperature slid below 10 degree celsius in at least 11 places in the state. Phulbani was the coldest place in the state recording a minimum temperature of 6.5 degree celsius, while the mercury dipped to 7 degree celsius at the tourist destination of Daringibadi, also in Kandhamal district, the meteorological centre here said. Keonjhar recorded 7.2 degrees celsius, while the minimum temperature stood at 7.6 degree celsius at Angul, 8 degree at Sonepur, 9 degree at both Titlagarh and Sundargarh, 9.1 degree in Balasore, 9.5 degree in Sambalpur and Jharsuguda, it said. The cold wave sweeping large parts of north India continued unabated on Monday, with Srinagar witnessing its coldest night in 11 years at minus 6.8 degrees Celsius, resulting in partial freezing of the Dal Lake, and Amritsar reeling at 1.1 degrees Celsius. Thick fog engulfs Delhi, visibility drops to 200 mt

Owing to the prevalence of cold and dry northwesterly winds, the weather in the national capital will mostly be dry accompanied by dense fog. Amritsar reels 1.1 degrees Celsius as cold wave grips Punjab, Haryana

Ongoing cold wave conditions sweeping Punjab and Haryana continued unabated on Monday, with Amritsar reeling at 1.1 degrees Celsius. Amritsar and Halwara recorded identical minimum temperatures as the minimum in both states settled below normal limits, a Meteorological (Met) Department official said here. A thick blanket of fog reduced visibility at several places in the two states, including Ludhiana, Patiala, Adampur, Amritsar, Halwara, Sirsa, Bhiwani, Rohtak, Jhajjar and Ambala. Adampur recorded a minimum temperature of 1.6 degrees Celsius, while that in Bathinda was 3.2 degrees Celsius, the official said. Srinagar records coldest night in 11 years, minimum plunges to minus 6.8 deg C

Srinagar -- the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir -- recorded the coldest night in 11 years as the minimum temperature plunged to minus 6.8 degrees Celsius, resulting in partial freezing of the Dal Lake and water supply lines to residential areas on Monday. The all-time low recorded in the month of December in Srinagar is minus 12.8 degrees Celsius on December 13, 1934. "Srinagar city recorded a low of minus 6.8 degrees Celsius. This is the coldest recorded temperature in the city in almost 11 years. The city had registered a low of minus 7.2 degrees Celsius on December 31, 2007," an official of the MET department told PTI on Monday. Cold wave continues in Raj but night temperatures rise

Cold weather conditions continue to prevail in Rajasthan even as most parts of the state witnessed slight increase in the night temperatures, MeT officials said Sunday. On Saturday night, Sikar's Fatehpur Shekhawati recorded 1.4 degrees Celsius. The town had recorded sub-zero temperature for the last nine days. According to the MeT department, the only hill station of the desert state, Mount Abu, recorded 1.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday night. The lowest night temperature was recorded in Alwar at 3.4 degrees Celsius. Biting cold tightened its grip over Odisha Sunday with the temperature sliding below 10 degrees Celsius in at least 10 places. Keonjhar became the coldest place in the state recording a minimum temperature of 7.1 degrees Celsius, while the mercury dipped to 7.5 degrees Celsius at the tourist destination of Daringbadi in Kandhamal district, the Meteorological Centre here said. At 3.7 degrees C, Delhi records coldest December day in 12 years

The national capital on Sunday recorded its coldest December temperature in the past 12 years with mercury dipping to 3.7 degrees Celsius, as a moderate cover of fog surrounded the city dropping visibility. The minimum temperature for the month lower than Sunday's was recorded on December 29, 2007 at 3.9 degrees Celsius, according to data from the Met department. The Sunday's minimum temperature was four notches below the season's average, a Met department official said. Cold wave in parts of western UP

Cold-wave conditions prevailed at isolated places over western Uttar Pradesh, with Muzaffarnagar recording 0.4 degrees Celsius. The met office said shallow-to-moderate fog occurred at isolated places over the state and there was dense fog in some parts of western UP. Night temperatures remained below normal in Varanasi, Faizabad, Allahabad, Lucknow, Bareilly, Meerut, Gorakhpur and Agra divisions. Muzaffarnagar was the coldest in the state with 0.4 degrees Celsius. Day temperatures fell in Moradabad division and there wad no large change in the remaining divisions over the state.
