Max temp plunges to 19.5 degrees Celsius in Delhi

It was a cold and breezy day in the national capital with the maximum temperature plunging to 19.5 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 8 degrees Celsius, a notch above the normal, said a Met department official. The humidity oscillated between 95 and 41 per cent. The Met office has forecast partly cloudy skies along with mist and shallow fog in the morning and haze and smoke thereafter for Tuesday. "The maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 19 and 6 degrees Celsius respectively," the weatherman said. On Sunday, the maximum and minimum temperatures settled at 23.5 and 8.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

Automatic weather stations, mobile app for Kumbh Mela launched

Union Earth Sciences Minister Harsh Vardhan Monday launched a special weather service for the Kumbh Mela, which includes setting up of four automatic weather stations (AWS). The purpose of this service is to provide information of the prevailing weather and forecasts for the next three days, Vardhan said. Four AWS have been installed at four different locations in Allahabad and made them operational. The observation sites are distributed in all four directions within the radius of 5-10 kilometres and are located at the Allahabad University, Delhi Public School, G B Panth Institute of Social Science and Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS). A mobile app named 'KumbhMela Weather Service' has also been developed to disseminate the live weather information on temperature, humidity, rainfall and winds. Sunny Monday in Kashmir amid cold conditions

The valley witnessed a sunny morning Monday despite cold conditions being intensified in Kashmir and Ladakh region with a sharp drop in the minimum temperature at night, officials said. Kargil was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir at a low of minus 18.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Leh at a low of minus 16.2 degrees Celsius, the weather office said. The minimum temperature in Srinagar plummeted six degrees on Sunday night and settled at minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, an official said. Qazigund in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 5.9 degrees Celsius while, the nearby Kokernag town registered a low of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday night. The mercury in Kupwara town in north Kashmir settled at a low of minus 5.4 degrees Celsius, the official said. Gulmarg ski-resort in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 12.0 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam witnessed the coldest night of the season at a low of minus 14.6 degrees Celsius, the official said, adding it was also the coldest .

Cold wave sweeps across Punjab, Haryana

Cold wave swept across Punjab and Haryana on Monday with Adampur being the coldest place in the region with a minimum of 1.7 degrees Celsius. In several parts of both states, minimum temperatures dropped a few degrees below normal. The Union Territory of Chandigarh, the joint capital of both states, braved cold weather at 5.3degreesCelsius, an official of the MeT department said. Among other places in Punjab, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala experienced cold weather conditions at 2, 5.3 and 5.1degrees Celsius respectively. Pathankot, Halwara, Gurdaspur, Bathinda and Faridkot recorded their respective lows at 3, 2.6, 5.4, 2.7 and 3.9 degrees Celsius. In Haryana, Ambala, Hisar and Karnal recorded their respective minimums at 6.8, 5 and 4.6degrees Celsius respectively, up to two notches below normal. Rohtak, Narnaul and Bhiwani recorded their minimums at 7.6, 6 and 5.7 degrees Celsius.

Delhi: Cold wave intensifies, air quality 'very poor'

The overall air quality index (AQI) deteriorated to 'very poor' category here on Monday as a thick blanket of fog descended over the national capital.Delhi's AQI was docking at 386 in the morning, according to System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR).As per India Meteorological Department (MeT), the minimum temperature in Delhi will be 7 degree Celsius while maximum temperature is expected to hover around 20 degree Celsius.The wind speed in Delhi will be 9 km/hr and the humidity will oscillate between 70 per cent and 77 per cent.Fog lowered visibility in the national capital and surrounding areas, due to which as many as 12 trains are running late.Inadequate nutrition and exposure to cold wave have forced the homeless in Delhi to seek refuge in night shelters.While the national capital region is reeling under the intense cold wave, fresh snowfall was witnessed in parts of Jammu and Kashmir.Snow clearing operations are currently underway in Rajouri district.

Manali shivers at minus 5 deg C after fresh snowfall

Himachal Pradesh's famed tourist place Manali in Kullu district witnessed a fresh spell of snow, taking the temperature to minus five degrees Celsius, the meteorological department said. The tourist place witnessed 2 cm more snowfall from 5.30 pm on Sunday till 8.30 am on Monday, Shimla MeT centre director Manmohan Singh said. Other tourist destinations of the hill state like Kufri in Shimla district and Dalhousie in Chamba district also saw acute cold wave conditions at freezing point. The minimum temperature at Kufri and Dalhousie remained minus 2.9 and 0 degree Celsius, respectively, he said. Tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 12 degrees Celsius, the official said, adding the minimum temperature in another tribal district Kinnaur's Kalpa was minus 8.2 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in state capital Shimla and Palampur was 1 degree Celsius each, Singh added.

Snowfall shuts Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, leaves commuters stranded

Another spell of snow on Sunday forced the local authorities here to close Jammu Srinagar National Highway for vehicular movement. The region at present is under the grip of Chillai-Kalan, a 40-day long period of harsh winter. Delhi's air quality in severe category, rainfall might bring respite

Delhi's air quality was recorded in the 'severe' category Sunday due to a reduced wind speed even as authorities have forecast rainfall in the next couple of days which they said might lower the pollution level. According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the overall air quality index (AQI) in the city was 416, which falls in the 'severe' category. An AQI between 100 and 200 comes under the 'moderate' category, 201 and 300 is considered 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', while that between 401 and 500 is 'severe'. As many as 24 areas recorded 'severe' air quality and seven 'very poor' air quality, the CPCB said. In the National Capital Region (NCR), Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Noida and Greater Noida recorded 'severe' air quality, it said. The overall PM2.5 level -- fine particulate matters in the air with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers -- in Delhi was at 273, while the PM10 level was at 426, it said. After snowfall, sunny morning in Kashmir

Intermittent light snowfall continued in most parts of Kashmir Saturday night, but clouds made way for the sun Sunday morning even as the MET office has forecast mainly dry weather for the week ahead. "There was intermittent light snowfall at most places in Kashmir Saturday night, but the valley experienced a sunny morning today (Sunday)," an official of the MET office here said. He said the weather would improve from Sunday and would stay mainly dry for the week ahead. Cold wave grips Himachal after fresh snowfall

Cold wave conditions intensified across Himachal Pradesh Sunday with the capital city and many areas of upper and lower hills in the state receiving fresh bouts of snow, the Meteorological Department said. The plains and low hills of the state experienced rainfall, it added. Overcast skies in Delhi, light rain likely on Sunday

Overcast skies prevailed in the national capital on Saturday with the minimum temperature settling at 7.1 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year. The maximum temperature was recorded at 22.9 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average, said a MeT Department official. The humidity oscillated between 100 and 57 per cent. The MeT office has forecast cloudy skies along with the likelihood of light rain and thundershowers in the forenoon on Sunday. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 21 and 9 degrees Celsius respectively," the weatherman said. The maximum temperature on Friday was 22.3 degrees Celsius whereas the minimum had settled at 4.8 degrees Celsius.

Intermittent snowfall continued in Kashmir for the second consecutive day Saturday, leading to disruption in flight operations at the Srinagar airport, officials said.
