The Centre is working with the West Bengal government to implement the New Education Policy (NEP) in the state, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said. Speaking to reporters, Pradhan said the Centre and the state government were holding regular talks and if there is any gap, they are ironing those out. "I am not sure for what reason one will be against the NEP 2020. It is employment-generating, modern and contemporary. West Bengal reported 2,237 new COVID-19 cases on Friday and seven more deaths, as per the Health Department. The positivity rate was 14.41 per cent as the new cases were detected after testing 15,520 samples, it said. The active cases declined to 26,727 as 3,258 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, it added. At present, 668 patients are undergoing treatment in hospital, while the rest are in home isolation. West Bengal's COVID-19 tally rose to 20,77,005 on Wednesday as 2,455 more people tested positive for the infection, while six fresh fatalities pushed the toll to 21,294, a health bulletin said. The state had reported 2,243 cases and six fatalities on the previous day. The positivity rate stood at 15.47 per cent as 15,870 samples were tested for COVID-19. The state now has 28,399 active cases, while 20,27,312 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 3,019 in the last 24 hours, it added.
The Central Bureau of Investigation has named 41 people, including senior officials of Eastern Coalfields Limited, in its charge sheet filed at a court in West Bengal's Asansol in a multi-crore coal pilferage scam. Among others who find mention in the charge sheet are private companies and unknown officials of the CISF and Railways, a CBI statement said. "They entered into a conspiracy and in pursuance of that, fraudulently misappropriated coal from the coal reserve of leasehold areas under the dominion of ECL, and also from the coal stock parked in the Railway sidings for sale and supply," it said. "It was further alleged that the said accused had obtained undue advantage in the form of huge and regular cash amount as bribe from said private person and facilitated misappropriation of coal from ECL leasehold area and thereby extended undue protection & patronage to the illegal coal syndicate," the statement added.
