West Bengal on Sunday logged 2,659 fresh Covid-19 infections, down from 2,839 the previous day, pushing the caseload to 20,70,858, the health department said in a bulletin. Five more deaths due to the disease raised the toll to 21,276, the bulletin said. Altogether 20,18,791 people have recovered from the disease in the state, 2,476 of them since Saturday. Bengal currently has 30,791 active cases, with 544 of them undergoing treatment in various hospitals. The positivity rate stood at 17.16 per cent and the fatality rate at 1.03 per cent. As many as 2,57,97,505 samples have been tested in the state thus far, including 15,492 since Saturday.

North 24 Parganas registered 693 infections followed by Kolkata at 653. Five more deaths due to the disease raised the toll to 21,265, the bulletin said. The number of active cases rose by 1,187 to 30,043 Altogether 20,14,052 people have recovered from the disease, 1,875 of them since Thursday. The positivity rate stood at 19.54 per cent. The state since Thursday tested 15,699 samples, the bulletin added.

Bengal plans to take renewable energy generation from 5% to 20% by 2030

West Bengal is aiming to take its renewable energy generation to 20 per cent of the total installed capacity by 2030, a senior official said on Friday. At present, the renewable energy share of the total installed capacity is 5 per cent, she said. "We have set the target of generating energy from renewable sources at 20 per cent by 2030," said Nandini Chakravorty, the principal secretary of the Non-conventional and Renewable Energy Sources Department. Speaking at a conclave organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), she said rooftop solar panels have been installed in 1,954 schools of the state and work was underway to add another 1,890 schools to the list. "These initiatives will not only help us reduce carbon emission and achieve net zero sooner than the target, but also is a progress toward sustainable development.
