Most parts of Himachal Pradesh reeled under severe cold weather conditions as the temperature in tourist destination Manali in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district was recorded at minus 5.6 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological (MeT) department said Saturday. The minimum temperature in Kufri was recorded at minus one degrees Celsius for the fourth consecutive day, Met department Shimla director Manmohan Singh said. Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam tourist resort experienced the coldest December night in over a decade as the minimum temperature at most places in the valley settled several degrees below the freezing point, an official of the Meteorological Department said Friday. The night temperature in Pahalgam, which serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, plummeted over eight degrees Thursday night from the previous night's minus 1.5 degrees Celsius to settle at a low of minus 9.7 degrees Celsius, he said. The official said Thursday was the coldest December night on record in the past over a decade at the tourist resort. Higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Thursday while the plains witnessed intermittent rains as the minimum temperature settled below the freezing point at most places in the Valley and Ladakh region. Snowfall has been recorded in the higher areas of the valley like Qazigund, Kokernag, Pahalgam and Mughal Road during the night, MeT officials said. Hundreds of vehicles were left stranded Wednesday after authorities suspended traffic on the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the only road linking Kashmir with rest of the country, following snowfall, a senior officer said. Over 1,800 Kashmir-bound vehicles, including trucks and light motor vehicles, were stopped at various places between Banihal and Udhampur sector after heavy snowfall rendered the road slippery, said Senior Superintendent of Police (traffic) Shakti Pathak.
