Fresh snowfall in Kashmir, rains lash higher reaches

Fresh snowfall was witnessed in the higher reaches of Kashmir Monday and rains lashed the plains even as there was some respite from cold wave for valley residents. Moderate rains lashed the plains of Kashmir from early hours of Monday while there were reports of snowfall in higher reaches of the valley, officials said here. The MeT Office has forecast widespread rain and snow over the state with heavy falls at isolated places till Tuesday. The minimum temperature in Srinagar Sunday night settled at minus 0.3 degree Celsius, same as previous night, a MET official said. He said Qazigund, the gateway town to the valley, in south Kashmir recorded a low of 0.6 degree Celsius, while the nearby Kokernag town registered a low of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius Tuesday night. Heavy snowfall shuts Jammu-Srinagar Highway

The traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway -- the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country -- was suspended Monday as high altitude areas experienced heavy snowfall while plains were lashed by incessant rains. Jawahar Tunnel the gateway to Kashmir - along the 270-km highway received nearly two feet of snow since Sunday evening, forcing authorities to close the arterial road for traffic, an official of the traffic department said. However, local traffic on Banihal-Ramban stretch of the highway was allowed despite incessant rains which also triggered shooting of stones near Battery Cheshma this morning. The road was immediately cleared to allow local traffic, the official said. He said the snow clearance operation on both sides of the Jawahar Tunnel was going on despite intermittent snowfall. At 28.7 deg C, Delhi records warmest January day since 2012

Delhi recorded the warmest January day since 2012 on Sunday with the maximum temperature settling at 28.7 degrees Celsius, seven notches above the season's average. While it was cold and foggy in the early hours with a minimum temperature of 7 degrees Celsius, which is normal for this time of the year, the mercury rose to 28.7 degrees Celsius by the evening, a Met department official said. The humidity levels oscillated between 48 per cent and 100 per cent. The official said it was the warmest January day since 2012, when it was 25.6 degrees Celsius on January 16, 2012. Last year, the warmest day was recorded on January 19 at 27.7 degrees Celsius, he said. The maximum temperature is expected to drop on Monday to 25 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to be around 10 degrees Celsius, he added. Slight improvement in minimum temperatures in HP

There was a slight improvement in minimum temperatures at Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, an official at the MeT Department said. However, tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state with a low of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius, he said. The minimum temperature in Kinnaur's Kalpa town was minus 0.6 degrees Celsius, the official said. Shimla, Dalhousie and Kufri recorded minimum temperatures of 7.5 degrees Celsius, 5.1 degrees Celsius and 3.8 degrees Celsius, respectively. The MeT Department here has warned of heavy snowfall and rains in the high and mid hills of the state on Monday and Tuesday.

Cold, foggy Sunday morning in Delhi

It was a cold and foggy morning in the national capital on Sunday, with the minimum temperature settling at 7 degrees Celsius. A cover of moderate fog enveloped the city, with visibility dropping to 400 metres at Safdarjung, at 8.30 am, said a MeT department official. The MeT Department has forecast generally cloudy sky later in the day with the maximum temperature hovering around 26 degrees Celsius. Saturday was the warmest day in January this year at 25.9 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity at 8.30 in the morning was 97 per cent. A railways official said 10 north bound trains, including Unchahar Express, Brahmputra Mail, Kaifiyat Express, Bhagalpur-Anand Vihar Garib Rath, were running late due to fog, with average delay of 203 hours.

Winter storm forces airline cancellations, road troubles

A plane carrying 129 people skidded Saturday from a slick Chicago runway and a plow driver was killed when his truck rolled over outside Kansas City following a winter storm that covered many parts of the Midwest in snow and ice. No injuries were reported on the United Airlines flight at O'Hare International Airport as it arrived Saturday morning from Phoenix, Chicago Fire officials said. Saturday records warmest temperature of 2019

Saturday was the warmest day of 2019, with the maximum temperature settling at 25.9 degrees Celsius, six notches above the season's average. The rise in temperature was due to the western disturbance, said a MeT department official. The minimum temperature was recorded at 5.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average. Humidity oscillated between 100 and 45 per cent. The maximum temperature recorded on the same date last year was 27.7 degrees Celsius. Heavy snowfall, rain likely in Himachal on Jan 21, 22

The minimum temperature in most parts of Himachal Pradesh improved marginally on Saturday, the meteorological department said but warned that heavy snowfall and rain in high and mid hills of the state are likely on January 21 and 22.
