HP: Snowfall forces edu institutes in Shimla, Kinnaur to remain shut
The Himachal Pradesh capital, the tribal district of Kinnaur and several other places in the higher reaches of the state received fresh snow on Wednesday, while many areas in the lower hills witnessed rainfall which reduced the minimum temperature by a few notches. According to officials, education institutes in Shimla and Kinnaur district would remain closed on Wednesday in view of the snowfall. Fresh snowfall and rain has intensified cold wave conditions in the state, the meteorological department said.

Delhi likely to witness light to moderate showers
Rains in the past 24 hours resulted in a dip in the minimum temperature here on Tuesday morning to 10.3 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average. The Meteorological Department (Met) said Delhi received 2.4 mm rains in the past 24 hours up to 8.30 am on Tuesday. Light to moderate rains coupled with thunderstorms, and lightening in isolated pockets, is the forecast for the day, the weatherman said. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 22 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity in the morning was at 91 percent, he said. On Monday, the minimum temperature settled at 9.2 degrees Celsius, while the maximum was recorded at 25.4 degrees Celsius.

India to witness normal monsoon in India this year
Rainfall is likely to be normal this year, private weather forecasting agency Skymet Weather said on Monday.Coming out with the first 'Preliminary Monsoon Forecast Guidance for 2019', Skymet said, "Our first guidance for Monsoon 2019 is that there is more than 50 per cent chance of normal monsoon. We will come out with another update in the first week of April."According to the Chief Executive Officer of Skymet Weather, Jatin Singh, "The El Nino conditions were on the rise in the Pacific Ocean till December last. The temperatures are now declining, and the probability of El Nino is also falling. This will reduce to about 50 per cent by the time Monsoon arrives with a gradual decline thereafter as well. Going by the early indications, this means it is going to be devolving El Nino year."India defines average, or normal, rainfall as between 96 per cent and 104 per cent of a 50-year average of 89 cm for the entire four-month season beginning June.
11 fights diverted from Delhi Airport due to bad weather
As many as 11 flights were diverted from New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport to nearby airports due to bad weather in the national capital on Monday evening.Due to a sudden change of the weather in the national capital and overhead congestion, nine flights were diverted to Jaipur whereas two were diverted to Lucknow.Along with the change in weather, war memorial inauguration which included fly-past led to air-space restriction on civil aircraft movement that contributed to air-traffic congestion. There were also two VIP movements from the airport during the same time, which further prolonged the delays.Home Minister Rajnath Singh's scheduled departure from Lucknow to Delhi also got delayed due to weather conditions in the capital.On Monday afternoon, many parts of the city witnessed unprecedented rains and abrupt bad weather.

Rains lashed Delhi on Monday evening, making it pleasant for the people even as it increased the humidity in the air. The maximum temperature was recorded at 25.4 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, while the minimum temperature settled at 9.2 degrees, three notches below the season's average, a weather official said. The humidity oscillated between 95-45 per cent. The weather office has predicted overcast conditions along with the possibility of light-to-moderate rainfall and thundershowers with strong surface winds for Tuesday. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 22 and 13 degrees respectively," the official said. On Sunday, the minimum temperature settled at 11.8 degrees Celsius, while the maximum was recorded at 23.8 degrees Celsius.

HP likely to witness heavy snowfall on Tuesday
The Meteorological Department (Met) Monday sounded a yellow warning of heavy snowfall and rain in Himachal Pradesh even as the state continues to witness very low temperatures. The Met warned of heavy snowfall and rain in the high and mid hills and heavy rain in the low hills and plains of the state on February 26. Tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong and Kinnaur's Kalpa received 2 cm and 9 cm snow respectively from 5.30 pm on Sunday to 8.30 am on Monday, the Met centre in Shimla said. The national capital is likely to receive rainfall accompanied by hail and thunderstorm on Tuesday.According to Skymet Weather, a private weather forecasting agency, "dry weather will continue over Delhi and NCR area during the next 36 hours. Himachal Pradesh experienced slight relief from biting cold conditions as the minimum and the maximum temperatures increased by a few notches in most parts of the state on Sunday, the Meteorological (MeT) Department said. The minimum and the maximum temperatures increased by one to two degrees Celsius during the last 24 hours, the MeT Centre Shimla said. The lowest temperature in the state was recorded at Keylong at minus 7.2 degrees Celsius, it said.

Moderate rainfall likely in West Bengal over next 3 days
The Met department Sunday predicted moderate rainfall in West Bengal over the next three days owing to formation of a western disturbance over Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Rainfall is likely to occur over most places of South and North Bengal during the period, the Met department said. Thunderstorm with gusty wind and lightning is also expected in districts of Bankura, Birbhum, Purulia, Jhargram, East and West Burdwan and West Midnapore from Sunday evening. The weatherman warned of squally wind, speed exceeding 40 km per hour, with lightning and hailstorm in North Bengal on Wednesday. It advised fishermen not to venture into deep sea along and off West Bengal and Odisha coasts on February 26 and 27.
Multi-decade data may help predict how violent storms will affect India
Scientists have mapped the soil moisture and temperature variations in India over five decades using satellite data, creating a resource that may be a critical for improving predictions of how violent storms will affect any area. Thunderstorms embedded within Indian monsoon systems can deluge areas with dozens of inches of rain in little time, causing severe flooding and the loss of hundreds of lives each year. Better predictions of when, where and how much rain will fall is key to saving property and lives, researchers said in a statement.
