Cong releases third list of another 89 candidates for UP Assembly polls

The Congress on Wednesday released its third list of 89 candidates for Uttar Pradesh elections, reserving 40 per cent seats for women. The party has already declared 255 candidates in all for the state assembly elections. Its first list had 125 candidates and another 41 were declared in the second list. The third list of candidates includes 37 women. The Congress's first and second list had 50 and 16 women, respectively. Some of the women fielded by the Congress include those associated with the anti-CAA protests. The party is contesting UP assembly polls with women in focus and have reserved 40 per cent seats for them. It has also released a separate manifesto for youth, assuring them of employment opportunities and has laid down a roadmap of how to get those jobs, if the party elected to power. Uttar Pradesh elections are being held in seven phases starting February 10 to March 7 and the results will be out on March 10.

Gen Bipin Rawat's younger brother Col (retd) Vijay Rawat, who recently joined the BJP, on Sunday said he is not contesting the upcoming assembly polls in Uttarakhand. Col Rawat said he was asked by party leaders to contest but he said no to them. Asked what if they insist on fielding him, he said 99 per cent chances are that he would politely refuse. "I am not contesting the polls. I am interested only in serving the people of Uttarakhand," Col Rawat said in an interview to PTI. Joining the BJP less than a month ahead of the state assembly polls had given rise to speculation in the media that he might be given a ticket by the party. "My purpose behind joining the BJP was serving people and not holding an office or a post. During my 34 years in the Army I was transferred to different places. Shivpal Singh Yadav will contest the assembly election from Jaswant Nagar in Uttar Pradesh as a candidate of the Samajwadi Party-Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia) alliance. Jaswant Nagar in Etawah district will vote in the third phase on February 20. Yadav, who heads the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia), currently represents the constituency in the assembly. In a tweet in Hindi, the Samajwadi Party said, "Shivpal Singh Yadav ji will be the candidate of SP and PSP alliance from Jaswant Nagar assembly seat of Etawah." Shivpal Singh Yadav had got into a tussle with his nephew and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and formed the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia) before the last assembly polls in 2017.
