Proposals for transfer of 10 HC judges under process: Kiren Rijiju

Proposals for transfer of 10 high court judges are under various stages of processing, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju told Lok Sabha on Friday. Rijiju's statement comes days after the Supreme Court expressed displeasure over Centre's delay in clearing recommendations for transfer of HC judges, saying it was a very serious issue. In his written reply, the minister asserted that "no timeline" has been prescribed in the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) for transfer of judges from one high court to another. "As on February 06, 2023, proposals for transfer of 10 high court judges from one high court to other high courts are under various stages of processing," Rijiju said. He said judges of high courts are transferred according to the procedure laid down in the MoP prepared in 1998. As per the existing MoP, the proposal for transfer of high court judges is initiated by the Chief Justice of India in consultation with four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court, he pointed out. Centre admits Tejasvi Surya opened emergency door of IndiGo plane in Dec

BJP member Tejasvi Surya had accidentally opened the emergency door of an IndiGo aircraft last month and the airline did not find the passenger in violation of any rule, according to the civil aviation ministry. Surya, the ruling BJP's Bengaluru South MP, has been facing flak from Congress over the incident, which happened on December 10 last year at Chennai airport. To a question on whether the government through aviation regulator DGCA has identified the passenger who illegally opened the emergency door of a flight at Chennai, Minister of State for Civil Aviation V K Singh replied in the affirmative. "As per the report submitted by InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the name of the passenger alleged in the incident is Shri Tejasvi Surya who had boarded flight 6E-7339 (Chennai to Tiruchirappalli) at Chennai Airport on December 10, 2022. Parl panel pulls up DoT on internet shutdowns; asks to take stock of impact

Expressing concern over frequent internet shutdown without any empirical study, a Parliamentary panel has pulled up the Department of Telecommunications for not maintaining the record of incidents and inaction on several of its recommendations. The Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology on 'Suspension of Telecom Services and Internet and its impact' tabled in Lok Sabha on Thursday, the panel has asked the Department of Telecom (DoT) to lay down a clear cut principle of proportionality and procedure for lifting of shutdown in coordination with the home ministry to prevent any misuse of the suspension rules. The panel rejected the logic of the DoT and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for not maintaining the record of the shutdown, saying it cannot simply take the plea that police and public order are essentially state subjects and suspension of the internet does not actually come under the ambit of crimes. "The committee feel that a centralised database of all .

LPG can be sold at more economical rates if international price comes down

If international price of fuel comes down from its current price of USD 750 per metric tonne, domestic LPG can then be sold at "even more economical rates," the Centre told Lok Sabha on Thursday. The day international price is determined by a "variety of factors" and "one of the analysis I read said that in a few years time it will all be thing of the past because there will be so much gas available," Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said in the Lower House. "But we will have to navigate the next two or three years through the kind of global situation as it exists today and as it is evolving," he added. The Minister was replying to questions of the members who wanted to know why the cost of the domestic gas cylinders is not being reduced. He said the government is "sensitive" to the requirements of the consumers, particularly the most vulnerable. "We did not allow the cost of domestic LPG to increase. The Saudi contract price went up by 330 per cent,

Opposition targets govt on inflation, unemployment issues in Lok Sabha

Hitting out at the government, Opposition members on Wednesday in Lok Sabha claimed that the rate of unemployment in the country had increased and more people were pushed into poverty due to its "flawed" economic policies. Initiating the debate on the Union Budget, Gaurav Gogoi, the deputy leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, said the government has failed to rein in inflation and its policies, outlined by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, will "benefit companies on Dalal Street and not the common people". Taking a swipe at the government, Gogoi said he would give an 'A' rating to the Union Budget but it is not the "A rating we used to get in school", and added that he was referring to a corporate group. Every announcement made in the Union Budget was for the benefit of a particular corporate group and there was "nothing for the common people", Gogoi claimed. The Congress member said the government has announced capital expenditure to the tune of Rs 10 lakh crore of which nearly

The Congress leader's remarks had drawn a sharp response from Treasury benches, with Law Minister Kiren Rijiju asking him not to level "wild allegations" and to furnish proof of his claims. Lok Sabha adjourned till 2 pm amidst opposition protests over Adani issue

Lok Sabha was on Monday adjourned till 2 pm following protests by opposition parties demanding a joint parliamentary committee probe into the fraud-allegation-triggered rout in the Adani Group company stocks. Soon after the House met after the weekend break, opposition members, primarily Congress MPs, came to the well of the House shouting slogans and demanding a probe into the the tanking of the Adani Group scrips and sought a probe into the business practices of the corporate giant. Speaker Om Birla appealed them to go back to their seats and participate in the debate. This is not good. Sloganeering is against the dignity of the House. People have elected you to raise their issues in Parliament but you are not interested in participating in debate, he said. Birla said the opposition members should come to his chamber and discuss their demands and assured that he would give them enough time to raise the issues in the House.
