No praise enough for bravery of Indian forces in Galwan, Tawang: Rajnath

The bravery and valour displayed by the armed forces during the Galwan valley clashes and the recent face-off in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh is commendable and any amount of praise for them is not enough, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Saturday. Singh's comments during an address at industry chamber FICCI came a day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the government of downplaying the threat posed by China along the Line of Actual Control and saying it was "asleep" and not ready to accept the situation. Tawang clash: Lt Gen Kalita says India firmly in control of northern border

Border areas along the country's northern frontier are stable and Indian Armed forces remain firmly in control, Eastern Army commander Lt General R P Kalita Friday said. Kalita's assertion comes a week after Indian and Chinese soldiers clashed at the border area of Yangtze, to the north east of the monastry town of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, which had been invaded by China's PLA in 1962. Stating that there are different perceptions of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) by the Indian Army and China's People's Liberation Army at several points, he said that eight of these areas are acknowledged by both sides. 2 civilians killed, 1 injured as Army sentry opens fire in J-K's Rajouri

Two civilians were killed and one person was injured when an Army sentry allegedly opened fire on them in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday morning, officials said. The victims, who were reportedly working as porters with the Army, were approaching the alpha gate of an Army camp in the district around 6.15 am when they were fired upon, they said. The officials said Shalinder Kumar and Kamal Kishore, both residents of Rajouri, died in the firing, while another person was injured. The cause of the firing is not yet known, they said, adding that the situation in the area is tense and some agitated people pelted stones at the camp. Reinforcements have been rushed in and further details are awaited, the officials said.

In its 55th report tabled in Lok Sabha, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) pointed out inordinate delays in procurement of winter clothing for soldiers in high-altitude areas as well as implementation of the project for improving their housing conditions. It also recommended urgent revamp of the approach towards procurement of high-altitude clothing, equipment, ration and housing facilities for the troops deployed in those regions. The Indian Army bravely thwarted an attempt by the Chinese PLA from "unilaterally" changing the status quo in the Yangtse area of Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang sector on December 9, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in Parliament on Tuesday. The Centre on Tuesday told the Supreme Court a special selection board has been convened from January 9 to consider around 246 women Army officers for promotion. Senior advocate R Balasubramanian, appearing for the Centre, informed a bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha that the special selection board-III will consider the issue of promotion of these officers. "We are seized of the matter. They are saying special selection board will be over by January 23. We will keep it after January 24," the bench noted and posted the matter for further hearing on January 30. The Delhi High Court on Monday asked the petitioners who have challenged the Centre's Agnipath scheme as to which of their rights have been violated and said it was voluntary and those having any problem should not join the armed forces under it. Indian Army truck catches fire outside Udaipur due to malfunction

An India Army truck caught fire about 60 km from Rajasthan's Udaipur, ostensibly due to a technical malfunction, an official said on Friday. The truck was part of a five-vehicle convoy en route to the military station in Udaipur. A Quick Reaction Team of the Army swung into action and cordoned off the vehicle, stopping traffic on the highway, Defence Spokesperson Amitabh Sharma said. There was no loss of personnel or life. The Army personnel's prompt reaction also ensured no loss to public property or private vehicles, he said. Sharma added that the civil administration had also assisted with its resources for traffic management. The Army has ordered an internal inquiry to ascertain the facts, he said.
