Digvijaya Singh slams Centre for 'rise' in Chinese imports, questions PM

Amid a row over the statement of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on the threat of war from China, his colleague and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh on Saturday asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was afraid of that country as well as its government and army. Gandhi had said the Modi government was asleep and ignoring a threat of war from China, which had led to a verbal tussle between Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders. "Why does Narendra Modi fear China's army and government? When he was in the opposition, Modi used to advise then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to show the red eye (belligerence) to China. Where are those red eyes?" Singh asked. He was answering queries on the recent developments on the border between the two nations. Singh claimed when the Chinese military had intruded into India's land, the then chief of defence staff had admitted it but Modi had denied the development. The former MP chief minister claimed Chinese imports into India had doubled while Indi

Morbi bridge tragedy: Digvijaya Singh demands Gujarat CM's resignation

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has demanded the resignation of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel over the Morbi bridge collapse tragedy. A Congress delegation led by Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Gujarat party president Jagdish Thakor and former Madhya Pradesh CM Digvijaya Singh visited Morbi on Monday, a day after the suspension bridge over the Machchhu river collapsed. Rajkot Range Inspector General Ashok Yadav told PTI on Monday that 134 people were killed after the bridge collapsed on Sunday evening. Talking to reporters on Monday, Digvijaya Singh claimed it was a "government-made tragedy" and demanded that the state chief minister resign on moral grounds. "I don't want to do politics, but I have learnt that BJP ministers, MPs, collector and Morbi district superintendent of police were holding a meeting at a nearby place when the bridge collapsed on Sunday evening. They did not stop the meeting to come here," the Congress veteran further claimed. Singh al

Morbi bridge collapse: Act of God or act of fraud, Digvijaya asks PM Modi

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Sunday asked if the collapse of the suspension bridge on Machchhu river in Gujarat's Morbi district, in which at least 60 persons have died, was an "act of God or an act of fraud". Singh, who issued several tweets on the incident, was playing on the phrase that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reportedly used at a rally while lampooning the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal after the Vivekananda Road flyover collapsed in Kolkata on March 31, 2016, killing many. "Modi ji, is the Morbi bridge accident an Act of God or Act of Fraud? Singh tweeted while quoting a 2016 news report. He said the bridge was under repair for six months but collapsed five days after it was reopened. In Gujarat, where the Bharatiya Janata Party has been in power for 27 years, the Narmada canal broke during the first day's testing at village Bidra in Kutch district in July this year, while an overbridge in Bhuj, which took 8-9 years to build, had to be repaired

Kharge resigns in Rajya Sabha; Digvijaya, Tiwari in race to replace him

Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge has resigned as the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, sources said on Saturday, a day after he filed his nomination papers for the AICC president's election. Kharge's resignation, which the 80-year-old leader sent to Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday night, is in line with the party's declared 'One person, One post' principle that was announced at the Udaipur 'Chintan Shivir' in May. Senior leaders P Chidambaram, Digvijaya Singh and Pramod Tiwari are learnt to be the front-runners to take on the mantle of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha. The stage was set on Friday for a contest between Kharge and Shashi Tharoor for the Congress president's post. Kharge, a Dalit leader from Karnataka, has emerged as the clear favourite. The nomination of K N Tripathi, a former Jharkhand minister, has been rejected. Kharge, Tharoor and Tripathi filed nominations on the last day of the process which saw the AICC headquarters come back to life

Digvijaya Singh opts out of Congress president race, to back Kharge

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Friday announced that he will not contest the party president's election and would instead propose the candidature of his senior Mallikarjun Kharge. He said he has worked for the Congress all his life and will continue to do so. "Kharge ji is my leader and my senior. I had asked him yesterday if he wanted to contest. He said no. I met him again today. I told him I am with you fully if you are contesting. I can't think of contesting against him. He is filing his nomination and I will be his proposer," said Singh.
