Death toll in Turkey, Syria earthquakes reaches 9,400; deadliest in 10 yrs

The death toll from the earthquake in southern Turkiye and northern Syria has climbed past 9,400, making it the deadliest seismic event in more than a decade. Turkish authorities updated the country's death toll to 6,957 on Wednesday. In neighbouring Syria, the government has reported 1,250 deaths from Monday's pre-dawn earthquake in the areas it controls. The White Helmets, volunteer first responders in a rebel-held enclave, have reported 1,280 deaths. More than 30,000 people have been injured, and authorities expect the death toll to continue to climb as rescue workers race to pull survivors from the rubble in cities and towns across a wide area. In 2011, a magnitude 9.0 quake off the northeast coast of Japan triggered a tsunami, killing nearly 20,000 people. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Nepalin 2015 killed more than 8,800 people.

Frantic search in Turkey, Syria after massive quakes kill over 5,000

Rescuers in Turkey and war-ravaged Syria searched through the frigid night into Tuesday, hoping to pull more survivors from the rubble after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 3,400 people and toppled thousands of buildings across a wide region. Authorities feared the death toll from Monday's pre-dawn earthquake and aftershocks would keep climbing as rescuers looked for survivors among tangles of metal and concrete spread across the region beset by Syria's 12-year civil war and refugee crisis. Survivors cried out for help from within mountains of debris as first responders contended with rain and snow. Seismic activity continued to rattle the region, including another jolt nearly as powerful as the initial quake. Workers carefully pulled away slabs of concrete and reached for bodies as desperate families waited for news of loved ones. My grandson is 1 1/2 years old. Please help them, please... Israeli troops kill 10 in West Bank violence, many wounded: Palestinians

Israeli forces killed at least nine Palestinians, including a 61-year-old woman, and wounded several others in a large-scale raid on Thursday in a flashpoint area of the occupied West Bank, Palestinian officials said. It was the deadliest single operation in the territory in two decades. The Israeli military also fatally shot a 22-year-old Palestinian later in a separate incident. The raid in the Jenin refugee camp increases the risk of a major flare-up in Israeli-Palestinian fighting days, poses a test for Israel's new hard-line government and casts a shadow on US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's expected trip to the region next week. Hamas, the Islamist militant group that controls Gaza, threatened revenge. Violent escalations in the West Bank have previously triggered retaliatory rocket fire from the Gaza Strip. Israeli forces in the West Bank and on the country's border with Gaza went on heightened alert. Protesters poured into the streets across the territory, chanting in .

China reports almost 60,000 Covid deaths as govt fails to release data

China on Saturday reported nearly 60,000 deaths in people who had COVID-19 since early December following complaints the government was failing to release data about the status of the pandemic. The death toll included 5,503 deaths due to respiratory failure caused by COVID-19 and 54,435 fatalities from other ailments combined with COVID-19. The National Health Commission said those deaths occurred in hospitals, which left open the possibility more people also might have died at home. The report would more than double China's official COVID-19 death toll to 10,775. The official toll stood at 5,272 on January 8. The Chinese government stopped reporting data on COVID-19 infections and deaths in early December after abruptly lifting anti-virus controls. The World Health Organisation and other governments appealed to Beijing for more information amid a surge in infections.
