China committed act of floating balloon as they are Chinese govt: Biden

China committed such a brazen act of floating balloons across continental America because they are the Chinese government, US President Joe Biden said on Monday. They're the Chinese government, Biden told reporters at the White House when asked why the Chinese would commit such a brazen act of floating across the entire continental United States. The question of the balloon and attempting to spy on the United States is something that's anticipated from China. The question is whether or not -- when we asked China what they're doing, they didn't deny they had the balloon over -- they just denied what it was, Biden said in response to a question. It is not a question of trusting China, it's a question of deciding where we should work together and where we have opposition, said the president in response to another question as he landed on the South Lawns of the White House from Camp David. Biden said this is not going to weaken the US-China relationship. No. We've made it clear to Chin

Improved surveillance helped indentify Chinese balloon: White House

US officials said Monday that improvements ordered by President Joe Biden to strengthen defences against Chinese espionage helped identify last week's spy balloon and determine that similar flights were conducted at multiple points during the Trump administration. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Monday that after Biden took office, the U.S. enhanced our surveillance of our territorial airspace, we enhanced our capacity to be able to detect things that the Trump administration was unable to detect. Speaking at the event hosted by the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, Sullivan added that as part of those efforts we were able to go back and look at the historical patterns" and uncover "multiple instances during the Trump administration in which Chinese surveillance balloons traversed American airspace and territory. Several Trump administration officials have have said they didn't learn of Chinese surveillance balloons during their tenures. Before Monday, U.S

Russia wants normalisation of India-China relations: Russian Ambassador

Russia on Monday accused the US of "actively" exploiting the "contradictions" between India and China to its advantage and asserted Moscow and New Delhi accumulated mutual trust and confidence based on decades-old ties that would help the two sides to deal with the current geopolitical turbulence. In his address at a conference, Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov, at the same time, said that the India-Russia ties are "under stress" because of the tectonic geo-political shifts in view of the "arrogant" and "belligerent" approach by the US-led West on the Ukraine conflict. The envoy said Moscow wants to expand its economic engagement with Islamabad as a "weak" Pakistan is not good for the entire region including India. In a tweet later, he clarified that he meant a "destabilised" Pakistan is not in the interest of anyone in the region. The conference on 'Next Steps in India-Russia Strategic Partnership; Old Friends New Horizons' was organised by the India Writes Network and the

India's focus should be on reducing dependence on China: Suman Bery

NITI Aayog vice chairman Suman Bery on Sunday said that India's focus should not be on overall trade deficit with China, instead it should be on reducing New Delhi's dependence on Beijing for certain critical inputs. According to Bery, the right response is to diversify to other sources of supply for critical inputs including active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and supply chain for renewables. China is the world's largest producer and exporter of APIs and many of the Indian companies depend on imports of the ingredients to produce various formulations. "India's focus should not be on the trade deficit with China. It should be on our dependence on China for certain critical inputs," he told PTI. He was asked what measures India should take to reduce its rising trade deficit with China. He said it is unfortunate that in the last seven years, the larger powers, both the US and China have chosen to weaponise trade interdependence. "It is unfortunate that China, which is a very .

Ceat looks for opportunities as world seeks alternative to China: Official

With the world looking for an alternative to China for sourcing tyres, Ceat Ltd is planning to cash in on the opportunity based on its 'value brand' positioning despite slowdown in many economies, according to company Executive Director, Finance & CFO, Kumar Subbiah. The company, which gets 20 per cent of its total revenue from exports, plans to enter the US market in the later part of the current year, following up on its entry into the European market for truck and bus radial tires last year. In the current fiscal, the company's exports have been flattish as it "took some kind of beating, largely on account of current conditions in Europe and some other countries finding it difficult to get currency to import tyres", Subbiah told PTI. However, he said, "Exports, we expect it to come back to growth path in the coming year, subject to global macroeconomic conditions permitting that kind of growth. We set ourselves ready to take advantage of any requirements. "The world is looking .

Another Chinese surveillance balloon transiting Latin America: Pentagon

The Pentagon on Friday night said that another Chinese surveillance is transiting Latin America. We are seeing reports of a balloon transiting Latin America. We now assess it is another Chinese surveillance balloon. We have no further information to provide at this time, Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said. The detection of the Chinese surveillance balloon transiting Latin America comes a day after the Pentagon found a Chinese surveillance balloon within its territory flying over Montana, leading to US Secretary of State Tony Blinken postponing his planned trip to Beijing.

Chinese balloon to remain over US skies for a few days, says Pentagon

The Chinese balloon, of the size of three buses, laced with a significant number of payloads will probably be over the United States for a few days, the Pentagon said on Friday asserting that it has surveillance capabilities. The development has angered the United States and in protest has cancelled the Beijing trip of Secretary of State Tony Blinken, who was scheduled to leave for China on Friday night. This would have been the first visit of a top American diplomat to China in several years. President Joe Biden has been briefed about the violation of US airspace by China and he is closely monitoring the developing situation, the White House said adding that as of now they have decided against destroying it because of the safety of the public, but all actions are on table. We will continue to monitor it. Right now, we assess that it'll probably be over the United States for a few days, but we'll continue to review our options and keep you updated as we can, Pentagon Press Secretar

Mystery balloon discovery over Montana missile fields cancels US-China trip

The Pentagon said at midday Friday that a Chinese spy balloon had moved eastward and was over the central United States, and that the U.S. rejected China's claims that it was not being used for surveillance. Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, refused to provide details on exactly where the balloon was or whether there was any new consideration of shooting it down. The military had ruled that option out, officials had said, due to potential risks to people on the ground. Ryder said it was at an altitude of about 60,000 feet, was maneuverable and had changed course. He said it currently was posing no threat. He said there was only one balloon being tracked.
