A Delhi court has denied bail to businessman Ajay Ramesh Nawandar in a Rs 34,615-crore bank fraud case involving Dewan Housing Finance Limited (DHFL), on account of his possible influence on both evidence and witnesses. The court held that the accused was prima facie complicit at some stage in the diversion of the humongous funds originating from the loans. In the present facts, the Court is inclined to decline the bail not because the offences are economic in nature but on account of the investigation into the present offences being intricate, the accused prima facie being complicit at some stage of the handling/diversion of the humongous funds originating from the loans, a strong likelihood of him tampering with evidence and the foreseeable possibility of him influencing witnesses if admitted to bail, Special Judge Vishal Gogne said. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had earlier conducted searches at Nawandar's premises and recovered a large collection of uber-luxury watch

The CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry over allegations of alleged corruption in the procurement of 1,000 low-floor buses by the Delhi government, officials said on Sunday. The enquiry was registered on a reference of the Union Home Ministry, they said. The Delhi government had refuted the "allegations" of corruption in bus procurement and accused the BJP-led central government of "harassing" it by using the CBI. The matter of "corruption" in annual maintenance contract (AMC) of the bus procurement by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) was raised by the BJP in Delhi Assembly in March this year. A three-member committee formed by former Lt governor Anil Baijal in June had found procedural "flaws" in the AMC and recommended scrapping it. The LG had referred the matter to the MHA in for its consideration, the officials said. A preliminary enquiry is the first step in ascertaining allegations in a complaint if they prima facie indicate a crime deserving an FIR, they said.
Facing the heat in the excise policy "corruption" case, Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Sunday claimed the CBI issued a Look Out Circular against him, but officials said the agency has not taken such action "as of now" against any of the accused. While the AAP intensified its attack on the Modi government, accusing it of playing the "CBI-ED" game every morning, the BJP targeted Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying he is getting nervous as the roots of the scam are leading to his doorstep, and asserted that no one is above the law including the Aam Aadmi Party convenor. Claiming the CBI found "nothing" during the raid at his residence on Friday, Sisodia said the agency was doing a drama of issuing a Look Out Circular (LOC) against him when he is "roaming freely" in Delhi and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi if he is unable to find him. However, officials said the CBI has also not felt the need to issue any LOC against public servants so far because they cannot lea
The Centre, the CBI and the BJP are working with the sole motive of stopping Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal from becoming prime minister in 2024, embattled Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Sunday. He also said the Congress was not an alternative as no one in the country was talking about the party anymore, and people were thinking about giving Kejriwal a chance. He also appeared non-committal on any future political alliance for the AAP, saying parties should come out of the "mindset of scratching one another's back". In an interview to PTI, Sisodia, whose house was raided Friday by the Central Bureau of Investigation over alleged corruption in the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22, said "Ek mauka Kejriwal ko (One chance to Kejriwal)" has become a talk across the country. He said the people of the country want Kejriwal to become prime minister as everyone deserves good education, healthcare, employment and cheap or free electricity "which can only be provided by t
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Sunday he was not afraid of a CBI probe but the agency should also investigate the alleged scam in the Bundelkhand Expressway construction which developed cracks just five days after the prime minister inaugurated it. In an interview with PTI, Sisodia, who is among 15 people and entities named in an FIR registered by the CBI in connection with alleged irregularities in the implementation of the excise policy, said his party was not scared of any investigation and asserted that the scams being alleged by BJP leaders were nothing but "shagufe (lies)". On Saturday, the deputy chief minister said he might be arrested in two-four days. Recently, based on a report submitted by the Delhi chief secretary, Lt Governor V K Saxena had recommended a CBI probe into the Kejriwal government's Excise Policy, 2021-22, over alleged violations of rules and procedural lapses. Claiming that he was unaware about any report, Sisodia said, "The BJP, CBI, L-G,
The Central Bureau of Investigation has not issued a Look Out Circular "as of now" against any accused including Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the excise policy scam case, officials said Sunday. This comes after Sisodia claimed a lookout notice against him in the excise policy case being probed by the CBI and termed the move a "drama" as the agency found "nothing" during a raid at his residence on Friday. "As of now" no Look Out Circulars (LOC) have been issued against any of the accused in the case, the officials said. The CBI has also not felt the need to issue an LOC against public servants so far because they cannot leave the country without intimating the government, they said. Sisodia is among 15 individuals and entities named in an FIR registered by the CBI in connection with alleged irregularities in the implementation of the Delh

Hitting back at Union Minister Anurag Thakur for calling Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal "kingpin of irregularities" in the Delhi Excise Policy, the AAP said the country is watching how Prime Minister Narendra Modi is "misusing" the central probe agencies to "harass" the Delhi government. By targeting Kejriwal, the BJP is actually positioning the AAP national convenor as the principal challenger to Modi ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party said. "The CBI raided 31 locations and carried out searches for several hours but the probe agency did not tell what their sleuths found at Sisodia's residence and how much gold they recovered," AAP chief spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj told a press conference. The counsel also claimed that Mondal had pressurised a doctor to prescribe "complete rest". Mondal was arrested on August 11 by the CBI in connection with its investigation into the alleged cattle smuggling scam.
