Staring down a possible indictment, a defiant Donald Trump is hoping to put on a show of force Saturday at the first rally of his 2024 presidential campaign, held in a city made famous by deadly resistance against law enforcement. Trump's supporters began lining up the day before doors opened on the airport grounds in Waco, which will mark the 30th anniversary of the Waco massacre next month. In 1993, an attempted raid by law enforcement of a compound belonging to the Branch Davidians, a religious cult, resulted in a shootout that led to a 51-day siege, ending in a blaze that left dozens dead. The rally comes as Trump has berated prosecutors, encouraged protests and raised the prospect of possible violence should he become the first former president in U.S. history to face criminal charges. Some of his recent rhetoric has echoed language he used before the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by a mob of his supporters seeking to stop the transfer of power to Democrat Joe .

Police in El Paso, Texas, say one person was killed and three other people were wounded in a shooting Wednesday in a shopping mall. One person has been taken into custody, El Paso police spokesperson Sgt. Robert Gomez said. No immediate information was given about that person. "It's too early to speculate on motive," Gomez said. The three who were wounded were hospitalized, Gomez said. Their conditions were not known. Gomez said police believe the scene is secure and that officers are sweeping through the whole mall to verify that. Authorities have set up a reunification centre at a nearby high school. Wednesday's shooting happened in a busy shopping area and across a large parking lot from a Walmart where 23 people were killed in a racist attack in 2019.

Elon Musk has urged a federal judge to shift a trial in a shareholder lawsuit out of San Francisco because he says negative local media coverage has biased potential jurors against him. Instead, in a filing submitted late Friday less than two weeks before the trial was set to begin on January 17 Musk's lawyers argue that the trial should be moved to the federal court in the western district of Texas. That district includes the state capital of Austin, which is where Musk relocated his electric car company, Tesla, in late 2021. If a move isn't possible, Musk's lawyers want the trial postponed until negative publicity regarding Musk's purchase of Twitter has died down. For the last several months, the local media have saturated this district with biased and negative stories about Mr. Musk, attorney Alex Spiro wrote in a court filing. Those items have personally blamed Musk for recent layoffs at Twitter, Spiro wrote, and have charged that the job cuts may have even violated laws. Th

Three buses of recent migrant families arrived from Texas near the home of Vice President Kamala Harris in record-setting cold on Christmas Eve. Texas authorities have not confirmed their involvement, but the bus dropoffs are in line with previous actions by border-state governors calling attention to the Biden administration's immigration policies. The buses that arrived late Saturday outside the vice president's residence were carrying around 110 to 130 people, according to Tatiana Laborde, managing director of SAMU First Response, a relief agency working with the city of Washington to serve thousands of migrants who have been dropped off in recent months. Local organizers had expected the buses to arrive Sunday but found out Saturday that the group would get to Washington early, Laborde said. The people on board included young children. Some were wearing T-shirts despite temperatures hovering around 15 degrees Fahrenheit (-9 degrees Celsius). It was the coldest Christmas Eve on

Infowars host Alex Jones filed for personal bankruptcy protection in Texas on Friday as he faces nearly $1.5 billion in court judgments over conspiracy theories he spread about the Sandy Hook school massacre. Jones filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in bankruptcy court in Houston. His filing lists $1 billion to $10 billion in liabilities. The bankruptcy filing comes as Jones faces court orders to pay nearly $1.5 billion in damages to relatives of victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting for calling the massacre a hoax. A Connecticut jury in October awarded the families $965 million in compensatory damages, and a judge later tacked on another $473 million in punitive damages. Earlier in the year, a Texas jury awarded the parents of a child killed in the shooting $49 million in damages. Jones has laughed at the awards on his Infowars show, saying he has less than $2 million to his name and won't be able to pay such high amounts. The comments contradicted th

A strong earthquake that struck a remote area of the West Texas desert caused damage in San Antonio, hundreds of miles from the epicenter, officials said. University Health said on Thursday that its Robert B. Green historical building was deemed unsafe because of damage sustained from the quake, which hit Wednesday in a remote area near the New Mexico border. The historical building is more than 100 years old and has been closed off for safety reasons, University Health said. The quake initially had a 5.3 magnitude but that was revised upward to 5.4. The earthquake's epicenter was about 23 miles (37 kilometers) south of Mentone, a tiny community about 350 miles (560 kilometers) northwest of San Antonio. It was one of the strongest earthquakes on record in Texas and hit in an area known for oil and gas production. On Thursday, the state's Railroad Commission which regulates Texas' oil and gas industry sent inspectors to the site to determine whether any actions were ...

National transportation officials are in Dallas on Sunday investigating the cause of the midair crash of two historic military planes during an air show that left six people dead. A World War II-era bomber and a fighter plane collided and crashed to the ground in a ball of flames on Saturday, leaving crumpled wreckage in a grassy area inside the Dallas Executive Airport perimeter, about 16 kilometers from the city's downtown. The crash came three years after the crash of a bomber in Connecticut that killed seven, and amid ongoing concern about the safety of air shows involving older warplanes. The company that owned the planes flying in the Wings Over Dallas show has had other crashes in its more than 60-year history. The crash claimed six lives, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins tweeted Sunday, citing the county medical examiner. Authorities are continuing to work to identify the victims, he said. Dallas Fire-Rescue told The Dallas Morning News there were no reports of injuries on t

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott decisively won a third term on Tuesday night, defeating Democrat Beto O'Rourke in a midterm race that tested the direction of America's supersized red state following the Uvalde school massacre and a strict new abortion ban. The victory underlined Abbott's durability. Despite record spending in the race that topped more than USD 200 million combined, O'Rourke was in danger of losing by double-digits just four years after his narrow US Senate loss that was the closest by a Texas Democrat in decades. Tonight, Texans sent a very resounding message," Abbott said during a victory speech in the southern border city of McAllen. In rapidly changing Texas a booming juggernaut of 29 million people that is becoming younger, less white and a magnet for major companies Abbott remained a bulwark for the GOP in the face of a high-profile and hard-charging challenger. Abbott capitalised on anxieties about crime and inflation against a charismatic rival who took

A man, who was found guilty of capital murder for gunning down Deputy Sandeep Dahliwal, the first turbaned Indian-American Sikh police officer in the US state of Texas in 2019, has been convicted by a court here. Robert Solis, 50, was convicted by the jury of the Harris County Criminal Court in Houston for the capital murder of 42-year-old Dahliwal, a 10-year-veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office. He had drawn widespread notice when he gained permission to wear a turban as part of his uniform in 2015, and was killed in an ambush-style shooting while on duty on September 27, 2019. With Dahliwal's family in the courtroom on Monday, the jury took less than 30 minutes to announce the verdict. Solis, who fired his attorneys, had decided to represent himself in court. He started his opening statement in the punishment phase by asking for the death penalty. "Since you believe I'm guilty of capital murder, I believe you should give me the death penalty," Solis told the jury. Juror

Five people were found dead in a Central Texas residential neighbourhood Thursday, officials said. Details on what happened were sketchy, but a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety said officers of several law enforcement agencies converged on the neighbourhood in McGregor, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Waco. Sgt. Ryan Howard declined to say if the five had gunshot wounds, saying that the cause of death was still to be determined. Law enforcement officers shot one person, and a suspect was in custody, he said. Howard declined to say if the suspect was the one shot, but he added that the suspect was alive and there was no ongoing threat to the public. No motives, relationships and other details were immediately determined, and identities were being withheld until relatives could be notified, he said. However, the McGregor Independent School District issued a statement that it had sent counselors to various campuses. In light of today's events, and out of

Alarmed parents laid siege to a Texas high school Tuesday after a classroom shooting report that ultimately proved to be false. The siege at Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio began about 1 pm Tuesday after police received a call of a possible shooting in progress at the school, according to a police statement. The school was placed on lockdown as police entered and began clearing the campus but found no evidence of an active threat or shooting. "Our department and San Antonio Police Department established there was no shooting, but then we had to do a methodical search room by room with our strike teams," said Chief Johnny Reyes of the San Antonio Independent School District police. "We went to the place where they said the shooting had occurred and we were able to quickly establish that no shooting had happened." Instead, some students were found to have had an altercation, but they denied having or displaying a weapon at any point, Reyes said. But frightened students

Two suspects, including a teen, have been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting in Fort Worth last week that left a 17-year-old and a 5-year-old dead, police said Tuesday. Anthony Ray Bell-Johnson, 21, and a 16-year-old male juvenile have been charged with capital murder. In a statement, police said the pair were arrested and jailed over the Labour Day weekend. Police were not releasing the identity of the teen because of his age. It was unclear from jail records if either suspect had an attorney. Killed in the August 28 shooting were Rayshard Scott, 5, and his cousin, Jamarrien Monroe, 17. Police say a car drove up to a house in far north Fort Worth at about 2:15 pm, and a person or persons in the vehicle opened fire on the front yard. Tijuana West, Jamarrien Monroe's mother, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that she was upstairs when she heard what sounded like fireworks. It happened so fast, she said. I was just trying to figure out where my babies were. She said sh
