Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday said the handicraft and handloom sector of the Union Territory has recorded an unprecedented growth in the last three months and registered Rs 729 crore worth exports despite instability in the global market. Sinha's remarks came at a function here where he presented the Union Territory-level award to the artisans. The Lt Governor congratulated all the award winners for their commendable service to preserve and promote priceless cultural and artistic heritage. He said the administration has taken several important steps to boost handicraft and handloom sector. "We are committed to provide training, design, technology, financial and other infrastructure support that will significantly contribute to the growth of this sector and earnings of artisans," he added. Handloom industry should diversify to attract more youth to its products, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday. The Minister, while inaugurating the Balaramapuram Handloom Producer Company Limited (BHPCL) Common Facility Training Centre here, said every weaver should benefit from the profit of the company. "The handloom industry should diversify the products for boosting profitability as well as attracting more youth to handloom products," she said. She said the Balaramapuram handloom products are of high quality and added that she herself was wearing a Balaramapuram saree. Sitharaman said Balaramapuram should make use of the developmental market as it is environment-friendly. "Weavers should utilise e-marketing and the government e-marketplace portal for marketing their products. Nabard will provide support in this regard. The Central government is ready to consider any proposal from the State for the development of Balaramapuram," she added. Union Minister
: The working president of ruling TRS in Telangana K T Rama Rao on Friday claimed that the enhancement of GST on handlooms and textiles from five to 12 per cent would be a death knell for the industry. Rama Rao, State Minister for Industries, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the matter to save weavers. "Hon'ble @narendramodi Ji, on the national handloom day you had talked of strengthening #Vocal4Handmade. Contrary to the idea, your govt has enhanced GST on Handlooms & Textiles from 5 to 12 % which will be a death knell for the industry. Request you to intervene & save weavers," Rama Rao, son of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, tweeted.
