A survey by DigitalOcean reveals that 44 per cent of India-based software developers are considering leaving their jobs this year, compared to 42 per cent globally.

The survey covered over 2,500 developers from 94 countries (including the US, India, Germany, Canada, and UK) on their participation in the open source (OS) community, job satisfaction, and challenges.

The Great Resignation of 2020-2021 has led to a shortage of developers, motivated largely by compensation and a desire for remote work, the survey reveals.

Developers are also leaving jobs to start their own firms. Entrepreneurship, clearly, is strong among this group.

Developers in short supply

  • 32% of those working more than a year have started a new job in the past year, and 44% are considering leaving, or may consider leaving theirjobs this year
  • 42% of those who haven’t left their jobs yet are either considering leaving, or may consider leaving their current jobs this year
  • 64% of those with less than a year’s experience, and 32% of those with 1–5 years’ experience, left a job recently. By comparison, only  21% with more than 15 years of experience have done so

  • Server-less technology: 43% of respondents are using it, and of those using it, 61% expect their usage to increase
  • Low-code/no-code tools: In India, 23% say these make their job easier, and 18% say they allow them to focus on more vital tasks; 15% say they are overhyped
  • Blockchain and automation (AI/ML): 55% of those in India (33% in  total sample) are already using blockchain tech. Also, 13% of India-based respondents plan to use OS for blockchain tech next year (7% in the total sample), while 68% are using automation (57% inthe total sample)

Key role of open source

  • Half of developers reported participating in OS in the past year, a little more than in 2021
  • 64% of those surveyed said their firm uses OS code for 50% or more of their software
  • 35% of startups and SMBs use OS in 50% or more of their software, compared to 28% of enterprises
