Japan is among a range of Asian-Pacific nations, including Australia, India and the Philippines, that have protested more assertive military actions by China in recent years. Beijing, for its own part, has accused Washington of trying to contain it with “Asian NATO” built on groups such as the Quad -- with Australia, India and Japan -- and Aukus, with Australia and the UK.
