Tamil Nadu reports 14 deaths due to heavy rains; waterlogging in Chennai

As many as 14 people have lost their lives in Tamil Nadu due to heavy rains, said Kumar Jayanth, Principal Secretary, Revenue Department on Thursday."Till now, 14 people have lost their lives in the state due to heavy rains. Due to overnight rainfall, there is waterlogging in parts of Chennai today. 13 subways waterlogged will be cleared, 160 fallen trees removed. In last four days, almost 20 lakh people given food packets in Chennai," said Kumar Jayanth.Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Chennai said that extremely heavy to heavy rainfall is likely to occur in six districts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday."The Depression over southwest Bay of Bengal lies about 140 km southeast of Chennai. Heavy rains lash Delhi, parts of western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana today

Heavy rains lashed the national capital on Sunday leading to waterlogging and traffic jams at several parts of the city causing inconvenience for commuters. The weather office had forecast a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rain and thundershowers. The maximum temperature on Sunday is likely to settle around 33 degrees Celsius. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the untimely rains to western disturbance. Besides Delhi, moderate to heavy rains were predicted for almost all adjoining areas in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana and many of those falling under the National Capital Region. Delhi airport's forecourt waterlogged, 5 flights diverted due to weather

The forecourt of the Delhi airport was waterlogged for a "short period" Saturday morning due to sudden heavy rains, its operator DIAL said. Sources said five flights were diverted from the airport this morning due to the bad weather conditions. Waterlogging has been reported from several parts of the national capital including Moti Bagh and RK Puram in south Delhi after rains lashed the city Saturday morning. The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said on Twitter that "due to sudden heavy rain, for a short period, there was waterlogging at the forecourt". "Our team was immediately aligned to look into it and the issue has been resolved," it added. An official of the meteorological department said the national capital received 97 mm rainfall since Friday morning.

Extensive waterlogging, traffic congestion in Delhi due to heavy rains

As rains continued to lash Delhi, extensive waterlogging and traffic snarls were reported at several places in the city on Sunday. The Safdarjung Observatory, considered the official marker for Delhi, recorded 28.2 mm rainfall, while the Ridge station registered 28.6 mm rainfall from 8.30 am on Saturday to 8.30 am on Sunday, officials said. According to the Public Works Department, Yamuna Bazar, Khanpur, Rohtak Road, Lodhi Road, Azadpur underpass, Zakhira underpass, Shakti Nagar underpass, Kirari, Sagarpur, among others witnessed severe waterlogging. PWD officials said nearly 20-30 waterlogging complaints were received in the morning. The officials said the workers are on the ground and waterlogging-related complaints are being attended on priority. World class drainage system to be developed in Delhi: CM Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said a "world class drainage system" will be developed across the national capital. He said drainage systems like the one at Minto Road here will be replicated across Delhi and drains and sewers will be desilted regularly. The chief minister made the announcement after taking part in a review meeting on city's drainage system with officials from Public Works Department (PWD), civic bodies, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC).
