US Prez Biden calls for urgent police reforms in State of the Union address

President Joe Biden has admitted that he never had to talk to his children about how to conduct themselves with the police like many Black and Brown families have to have with their children and urged the US Congress to "do something" on police reforms, days after Tyre Nichols was beaten to death by Memphis police during a traffic stop. Biden, in his State of the Union address on Tuesday, asked lawmakers and top officials present at the primetime event to imagine how some parents feel, worrying their children may not come home. As he spoke, the president acknowledged the parents of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old man who was beaten to death by police officers in Memphis, Tennessee. The mother and stepfather of Tyre Nichols -- RowVaughn and Rodney Wells -- were among First Lady Jill Biden's guests at President Biden's second State of the Union address. They stood up during the State of the Union address and received a standing ovation. "Joining us tonight are the parents of Tyre Nichol

'Made in America' is my top priority, says US President Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden has said that Made in America is the top priority of his administration and announced that bridges, roads and highways in the country will be made with American construction materials. Biden in his second State of the Union Address on Tuesday said to maintain the strongest economy in the world, the US also needs the best infrastructure in the world. The US used to be number 1 in the world in infrastructure, but then it fell to number 13th, he said. Now we're coming back because we came together to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the largest investment in infrastructure since President Eisenhower's Interstate Highway System, he said. He said 'Buy American' has been the law of the land since 1933. "But for too long, past administrations have found ways to get around it. Not anymore, Biden said in his joint address to the US Congress. Tonight, I'm also announcing new standards to require all construction materials used in federal infrastructure project

Tyre Nichols' family grieves 'on sacred ground' in Memphis after funeral

On the eve of the funeral for Tyre Nichols, who died days after a brutal beating by Memphis police officers just minutes from his home, his family was sharing remembrances and expressing grief. Nichols' older brother, Jamal Dupree, lamented he was not there to save his brother from the attack he suffered at the fists and feet of the five officers, who have been charged with second-degree murder and other offenses. "I've been fighting my whole life and the one fight I needed to be here for, I wasn't here," said Dupree, adding that violence was against his brother's nature. "My brother was the most peaceful person I've ever met in life," he said. "If my brother was here today and he had to say something, he'd tell us to do this peacefully." The family gathered on Tuesday evening with the Rev. Al Sharpton at the historic Mason Temple Church of God in Christ in Memphis where the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his final speech the night before he was assassinated to speak abou

Prez Biden believed to have invited PM Modi for state visit to US: Report

US President Joe Biden is understood to have invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a state visit this summer, PTI has learnt. The invitation has been accepted in principle and officials on both sides are now working on mutually convenient dates, according to multiple sources, who noted that it is currently in the early stages of logistical planning. Given that India is hosting a series of events this year related to G-20 leading to a summit in September, which among others would be attended by Biden, it is reliably learnt that officials from the two sides are looking for appropriate dates in June and July when not only both the US House of Representatives and the Senate are in session but Modi has a couple of days at his disposal when he does not have a predetermined domestic commitment or international engagements. At least a couple of days are required for the state visit, which among other things includes an address to the joint session of the US Congress and a state dinner at

Biden takes classified documents, information very seriously: White House

US President Joe Biden takes classified documents and information "very seriously", the White House said Thursday hours after it revealed that more classified documents were found from his residences and private offices. The Attorney General has appointed a Special Counsel, Robert Hur, to investigate the discovery of classified documents at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C. and the Bidens' personal residence in Wilmington, Delaware. "It is important for the American people to know this, is that the President has said, he takes classified documents and information very seriously," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference. "This is something, as you all know, that he will not shy away from saying and has continued to say this this week. And again, he was surprised that these records have been found. "He does not know what's in them and his team, once they identified that these documents were there, they immediately reached out

War in Ukraine at critical point right now, says US President Biden

The war in Ukraine is at a critical point right now, US President Joe Biden said Thursday as the US and Germany announced additional support for Ukraine. "Right now, the war in Ukraine is at a critical point. We have to do everything we can to help the Ukrainians resist Russian aggression. And Russia is not attempting to slow up. The actions they're taking are as barbaric as they were a year ago, and they're not letting up at all," Biden told reporters during a Cabinet meeting. Earlier this afternoon, Biden said, he had a long discussion with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz about Ukraine and their alliances in Europe and the EU. "We have a much larger contingent of countries that share our view, including Japan and others. But we talked about what we're going to do, he said. "Today we jointly announced a statement saying that we're going to increase support for Ukraine. We're going to provide the Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles to the Ukrainians, and the Germans are going to provi

US House congressional panel to discuss release of Trump's tax returns

The Democratic-controlled House Ways and Means Committee is expected to vote Tuesday on whether to publicly release years of Donald Trump's tax returns, which the former president has long tried to shield. Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., has kept a close hold on the panel's actions, including whether the panel will meet in a public or private session. And if lawmakers move forward with plans to release the returns, it's unclear how quickly that would happen. But after a yearslong battle that ultimately resulted in the Supreme Court clearing the way last month for the Treasury Department to send the returns to Congress, Democrats are under pressure to act aggressively. The committee received six years of tax returns for Trump and some of his businesses. And with just two weeks left until Republicans formally take control of the House, Tuesday's meeting could be the last opportunity for Democrats to disclose whatever information they have gleaned. Trump has long had a ...

President Joe Biden's bullish 2024 talk does little to tamp down chatter

President Joe Biden toasted a reelection campaign with his French counterpart. He and the Rev. Al Sharpton talked about the prospect during a photo-op. And, for someone who often meanders through his thoughts, Biden has been notably explicit about his political plans. Our intention is to run again, the president told reporters after the November midterms, noting that his family supports another campaign. He said his wife, first lady Jill Biden, has already counselled him not to walk away from the very important things he's doing on the job. None of that, however, has silenced a Washington parlour game about whether Biden will follow through with a second presidential campaign. The speculation reflects a persistent, though often privately expressed, scepticism among even some of Biden's allies that the 80-year-old president will ask voters to keep him in the White House until he's 86. Biden is expected to discuss the prospect of another campaign with those closest to him when he ...

GOP predicts midterm wins; President Biden warns of democracy threats

Republicans are eyeing major gains in Tuesday's elections and appealing to supporters over the final weekend of the 2022 campaign to punish Democrats for high inflation and crime rates that have risen in some places. President Joe Biden and his two most recent Democratic predecessors said the prospect of GOP victories could undermine the very future of American democracy. More than 39 million people have already voted in an election that will decide control of Congress and key governorships. Biden was set to campaign in suburban New York on Sunday after former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton made closing cases to voters on Saturday. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, head of the Democrats' House campaign arm, is in a tough contest for his seat north of New York City. But he insisted Sunday that Democrats are going to do better than people think on Tuesday, adding that his party is not perfect but we are responsible adults who believe in this democracy. I think this race is ...
