SC bench headed by CJI to hear on July 20 pleas of both factions of Sena

The Supreme Court on July 20 will hear pleas filed by both factions of the Shiv Sena pertaining to the Maharashtra political crisis.A bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli will hear pleas on Wednesday filed by Uddhav Thackeray-led camp and Eknath Shinde camp.Earlier, the top court had asked the Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Rahul Narwekar not to take any action on the new disqualification notices issued against the members of Shiv Sena.It had asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Maharashtra Governor, to inform its direction to the newly-appointed Assembly Speaker.The order of the bench had come after senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Uddhav Thackeray camp, mentioned th matter for urgent listing of the pleas saying the matters were posted for July 11 but were not listed today."The disqualification plea is listed tomorrow before the Speaker. Attacks on Shiv Sena workers won't be tolerated, says Uddhav Thackeray

Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Friday said attacks on party workers would not be tolerated. He was speaking after visiting the party's Byculla office and meeting Sena worker Baban Gaonkar who was attacked by unidentified persons on Thursday night. Byculla in South Mumbai is the Assembly constituency of Yamini Jadhav, one of the rebel Sena MLAs who has joined Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's faction. Shinde's rebellion last month, which toppled the Thackeray-led government, has split the party. "Attempts to play with the lives of Shiv Sena workers will not be tolerated. If police can not bring the culprits to book, Sena workers will do it. Police shouldn't get into politics," Thackeray further said.

Maha cabinet expansion likely after Prez polls, hints Sena's rebel faction

The much-awaited expansion of the Maharashtra Cabinet led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde may take place after the July 18 presidential polls, the rebel camp of Shiv Sena MLAs indicated on Monday. Talking to reporters here, the rebel Shiv Sena MLA faction's spokesperson, Deepak Kesarkar, said, There is no difficulty in Cabinet expansion. He was responding to a question on whether the Cabinet expansion was being delayed due to the on-going legal battle between the rebel camp and the Sena faction led by former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Currently, Chief Minister Shinde, who heads the rebel camp, and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP - both of whom took oath on June 30 - are the only members of the Cabinet. Kesarkar said there is an important meeting on July 13 in New Delhi related to the election of the next President and a representative from the rebel group will be attending it. On July 14, BJP-led NDA's presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu will visit Mumbai to seek .

Maha: Uddhav convenes meeting of party MPs on Monday to discuss Prez polls

Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray has called a meeting of the party MPs on Monday to take a decision on the next week's presidential election. Talking to PTI on Sunday, Vinayak Raut, Sena MP from Sindhudurg, said the meeting will be held at 12 noon. "The agenda is to discuss the party's stand on the presidential election slated to be held on July 18," he said. Some Shiv Sena MPs had earlier asked the leadership to support Droupadi Murmu, the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) candidate. In the past, the Sena had broken ranks with the NDA and supported the candidatures of Pratibha Patil and Pranab Mukherjee (both Congress leaders). The Sena left the NDA in 2019 as the party formed government with the Congress and NCP in Maharashtra after ditching the old ally BJP. Last week, Sena MPs Rahul Shewale and Rajendra Gavit had written to Thackeray and sought that the party back Murmu.

Support Murmu for President: Tribal Shiv Sena MP says in letter to Uddhav

Rajendra Gavit, the Shiv Sena MP from Maharashtra's Palghar Lok Sabha seat, has asked party chief Uddhav Thackeray to support the candidature of Draupadi Murmu in the July 18 Presidential election. While Gavit, who belongs to a tribal community, is the second Sena MP to suggest that the party back Murmu, candidate of the BJP-led NDA, the Uddhav Thackeray-led party has not yet declared its stand. The rebel Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde, now Maharashtra Chief Minister, has decided to support Murmu, according to sources.
