UEFA gathers European team to oppose Super League project at meeting

Organizers of European soccer's Super League project got the meeting they asked for Tuesday with UEFA's president. They found many more opponents also waiting there to criticize them. The meeting was held amid secrecy at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, four months after the parties were on opposite sides of a European Court of Justice hearing in an ongoing case that resulted from a group of storied clubs' failed launch of their own breakaway competition in April 2021. Super League promoter A22 Sports Management wanted a first formal meeting with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin after last month appointing its own chief executive. On Tuesday, instead of facing just Ceferin, the three-man A22 delegation led by CEO Bernd Reichart was met with a room full of European soccer leaders ready to denounce the Super League. Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain were among the clubs teaming with leagues, player union leaders and fan representatives to help send UEFA's message. UEFA s

Down with throat infection, Lakshya Sen withdraws from Australian Open

Suffering from a throat infection, star Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen has withdrawn from the upcoming Australian Open Super 300 badminton tournament. The 21-year-old from Almora picked up the infection just before the Hylo Open, where he lost in the opening round to Hong Kong's Ng Ka Long Angus in Saarbrucken, Germany. The Australian Open is scheduled to be held from November 15 to 20 in Sydney. "I had fever, throat pain and weakness after I reached Saarbrucken ahead of Hylo Open. I probably picked the infection while travelling from Paris," Sen, who returned to India on Saturday night, told PTI on Sunday. "I thought it is not that serious. I was training last Sunday and then on Monday, I felt it had aggravated. I consulted doctor online and took medicine. It is under control now. But given the situation, I have decided to pull out of Australian Open." The Commonwealth Games champion said the fact that he has no chance of qualifying for the World Tour Finals also played a role in hi

IOA set to have equal male, female representation with voting rights

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will have equal representation of male and female members with voting rights in its General Assembly, a remarkable achievement considering its troubled and faction-ridden recent past, if it approves the draft constitution at its Special General Meeting on November 10. The IOA will also throw open the president's post to any citizen of the country, a radical change from the earlier requirement for a candidate to have served in the executive committee. A similar provision was included in the constitution of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) recently after it was banned briefly by the international parent body FIFA. The elected post of secretary general, which was held by some eminent personalities in the past, will no longer be there and his role will be taken over by a CEO appointed by the executive council. The CEO will have no voting right and will be an ex-officio member of the executive council. The draft constitution prepared by the
