TV sports market likely to reach Rs 9,830 crore by FY26, says report

The overall TV sports market is expected to touch Rs 9,830 crore and sports digital revenue will hit Rs 4,360 crore by FY26, according to a report. The digital revenue for sports, which was Rs 1,540 crore in FY21, is expected to grow three-fold to Rs 4,360 crore in FY26, it added. While Cricket continues to dominate the sports viewership in India with the IPL season having the most significant impact, other non-cricketing franchise-based events such as kabaddi, football, kho-kho etc are also witnessing traction. In the first nine months of 2022, the sports viewership in India stood at 722 million and is estimated to surpass the 776 million viewership of the pre-Covid year of 2019, as per the report. The digital revenue for sports is growing with a high double-digit CAGR of 22 per cent, said the joint report by industry body CII, KPMG and India Broadcasting Digital Foundation. Discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur banned for three years for use of steroid

Top Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur, who achieved stardom for her exploits at the Tokyo Games, was on Wednesday banned for three year for using prohibited substance Stanozolol, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has announced. Her ban will be effective from March 29, 2022. Kamalpreet was handed a provisional suspension in May this year after testing positive for the steroid, which was found in her sample that AIU collected at Patiala on March 7. "The AIU has banned Kamalpreet Kaur of India for 3 years for the Presence/Use of a Prohibited Substance (Stanozolol), starting from 29 March 2022. DQ results from 7 March 2022," the AIU said in a statement. Kamalpreet had finished sixth at the Tokyo Games in a splendid show. Kaur had made a rapid rise last year when she set a national record of 65.06m in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics. The football crazy state of Goa has been slowly warming up to futsal, an indoor version of the sport played on hard court. More than 15 futsal grounds have been developed in the state in a span of less than 10 years and promoters of the sport have termed it as nursery for football players and initiation into football. Talking to PTI, Futsal Alliance of Goa president Benjamin Silva said they had taken baby steps to promote the sport in 2016 and six years down the line, their efforts have borne fruit.
