Giant killer Japan beats Spain 2-1 as both teams advance at Fifa World Cup

Same stadium. Same result. Similar shocking victory for Japan at the World Cup. After beating Germany 2-1 in its opener, Japan found its way into the round of 16 of the World Cup by defeating Spain by the same score in its last group game Thursday. Spain also advanced despite the loss. Japan scored twice early in the second half to come from behind and defeat another European powerhouse and make it to the knockout stage for the second straight time. It was the first time Japan has advanced past the group stage in back-to-back tournaments. Ao Tanaka scored the winning goal from close range early in the second half. It took about two minutes for video review officials to confirm the ball hadn't gone out of bounds before the goal that gave Japan the win at Khalifa International Stadium, which is where Japan had shocked Germany in its opener. Japan finished at the top of Group E to set up a last-16 matchup against Croatia. Spain finished second and will take on Morocco. Spain and Ger

Suspicious envelope found at US Embassy in Spain amid probe: Official

Spanish officials say a suspicious envelope has been discovered at the US Embassy in Madrid and placed under police control. The finding on Thursday came as police reported a wave of explosive packages being sent in Spain's capital, including one that ignited at the Ukrainian Embassy. Police said other explosive devices concealed in postal packages were sent over the past two days to Spain's Defence Ministry, a European Union satellite centre in Spain and an arms factory that makes grenades sent to Ukraine. The Spanish Interior Ministry said police detonated the envelope detected at the US Embassy. There were no reports of injuries. Authorities also said that a similar explosive device was dispatched by regular post to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on November 24, but was disposed of by bomb squad experts. The latest discoveries raise to five the number of explosive devices that were sent by post around the country over the past few days. The Russian embassy in Madrid on .

Spain starts new code for manufacturers to avoid sexism in ads for toys

Spain said Wednesday it's enacting a new ethics code to discourage toy manufacturers from using sexist stereotypes such as dolls for girls and action figures for boys in advertisements as the Christmas season kicks off. A government statement said the new self-regulatory code urges companies to run adverts that engender an image of pluralism and equality, free from stereotypes. The characterisation of girls with sexual connotations will be prohibited and the exclusive association of toys with roles such as caring, domestic work or beauty with them (girls), and action, physical activity or technology with boys will be avoided, the statement said. The idea is that companies will no longer use colours such as blue or pink to indicate products intended for boys or girls, the government said. The code follows an agreement between the Consumer Affairs Ministry, toy manufacturers and publicity companies in April. The code, which updates another from 2005, goes into effect Thursday. It's

21 Indian wrestlers to miss World Championship after Spain rejects visas

In a bizarre decision, the embassy of Spain has denied visas to 21 Indian wrestlers, who were to compete at the U-23 World Championship in Pontevedra, on suspicion that they will not leave the territory before the expiry of visas, the national federation said on Monday. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had picked a 30-member squad for the Championship, that began on Monday, but only nine were granted visas. India's first ever Under-20 woman world Champion Antim Panghal was among the wrestlers who missed out on participation. "This is something we have never faced before. Despite presenting the Indian government's clearance and an invitation from the world governing body UWW, our wrestlers have been denied visas on the most frivolous ground," WFI Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar told PTI. "We have got the rejection letters this evening (Monday) after we made a request to release the passports as soon as possible. This is really bizarre. I really don't know how the officer came

Donald Trump speaks via video at rally of global far-right in Spain

Former US President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind Spain's far-right in a video shown at a rally in Madrid that also featured messages by the leading stars of Europe's populist right like Italy's Giorgia Meloni and Hungary's Viktor Orban. In a recording that lasted under 40 seconds made while Trump was on an airplane, Trump thanked Spain's far-right Vox party and its leader Santiago Abascal for what he called the great job they do. We have to make sure that we protect our borders and do lots of very good conservative things, Trump said. Spain is a great country and we want to keep it a great country. So congratulations to Vox for so many great messages you get out to the people of Spain and the people of the world. Vox captured national attention on Spain's political landscape in 2019 when it became the third-largest force in Spain's Parliament after an election that led to a national left-wing coalition that still holds power. Vox's messages include zero tolerance for

Leaders of Spain, Germany discuss ongoing energy crisis before EU summit

The leaders of Spain and Germany held talks in Spain Wednesday, two days before both participate in an European Union summit to discuss Europe's energy crisis derived from Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Snchez hosted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in the northwestern city of A Corua. The two centre-left leaders were accompanied by 15 ministers from their governments. The EU summit in Prague on Friday will likely include discussions on Germany's plan to subsidise gas prices for its consumers and businesses, a move that has raised questions from France and Italy. Snchez said that he empathises with Germany due to its pressing need to find alternatives to Russian gas and oil, while adding that the EU should find common solutions. Both Snchez and Scholz support reforming the EU's energy market. The consequences of the war in Ukraine impact us all, but clearly it has a greater impact on the countries with a higher dependency on Russian carbon-based fuels so w
