India qualify for T20 WC semifinals after Netherlands stun South Africa

India qualified for the semifinals of the T20 World Cup after Netherlands knocked South Africa out of the tournament with a stunning 13-run victory in Adelaide. With six points from four games, India are sitting on top of the Group 2 in the Super 12 stage. South Africa finished the tournament with five points from five games. Pakistan and Bangladesh are both on four points each from four games and the ongoing match between the two sides in Adelaide will decide the other semifinalist from Group 2. The winner will move to the six points and overtake South Africa. Earlier in Adelaide, Netherlands posted a decent 158 for 4 and then restricted South Africa to 145 for 8 to register their first win over the Proteas in any format of the game. India will take on Zimbabwe in the last Super 12 match later in the day here. A win will ensure they will finish as Group 2 toppers. If Pakistan also qualify for semifinals, an India-Pakistan title clash will be a possibility.

The report, titled 'Reinvigorating India's Engagements with Southern Africa,' was released in Johannesburg this week as part of the CII-Exim Bank Regional Conclave on India-Southern Africa Growth Partnership. Hindu community integral part of South Africa: President Cyril Ramaphosa

The Hindu community of South Africa is an integral part of the country's makeup, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Monday as he extended greetings of Diwali to the community members across the nation. The Hindu Community is an integral part of South Africa's rich multicultural tapestry. Members of the Hindu Community have made a significant contribution to our country since the arrival of indentured Indians to South Africa in 1860, Ramaphosa said. He was referring to the first Indians who arrived by boat in November 1860 to work on the sugar cane plantations of the then British colonial province of Natal. They were followed by thousands more, as well passenger Indians who paid their own way to start up businesses in South Africa. Descendants of these first Indian settlers now number 1.4 million South African citizens in a seventh generation in some instances. Ramaphosa also acknowledged the Indian community across several generations who were in the forefront of the struggle aga

Indian, French officials celebrate International Day of Non-Violence in SA

The Indian and French Consulates here jointly hosted an event to mark International Day of Non-Violence, held on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The event was hosted at Satyagraha House, the first residence of Gandhi during his stay in the city at the turn of the last century. A company has converted the residence into a boutique hotel where visitors can experience the lifestyle led by Gandhi. "It is now a provincial museum and we would very much like it to be a national monument," said Edna Oberholzer, manager of Satyagraha House. "Our brief here is to explain to people how this house fits into the history of Gandhi in Johannesburg. As part of that, we also touch on the issue of non-violence as Gandhi espoused," Oberholzer added. The manager said the Mahatma and his inner circle used this as a base and they started writing down all principles of Satyagraha, which they have displayed at various places in the house. "The first autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi was also writ

S Africa: Prez Cyril calls meet on electricity crisis, nationwide blackouts

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had an urgent meeting scheduled with his Cabinet on Wednesday to discuss the country's electricity crisis, which has led to unprecedented levels of nationwide power blackouts in Africa's most developed economy. The troubled state-owned power utility Eskom, which produces about 95% of the country's electricity, is implementing scheduled, rolling blackouts in an attempt to save electricity while struggling to keep its ageing and poorly maintained coal-fired power stations operational. Ramaphosa returned home to chair the meeting with his ministers after attending the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London. He cancelled his trip to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly. Eskom had started implementing Stage 6 power cuts, a level that means businesses and homes go without electricity for more than 10 hours a day. The company has since reduced the level to Stage 5, which requires South Africans to go without power for up to eight .
