Finance ministry agrees to customs duty proposal on solar modules: MNRE

The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has said that the finance ministry has agreed to its proposal to impose basic custom duty (BCD) of 40 per cent on solar modules and 20 per cent on solar cells from April 1, 2022. An office memorandum of the MNRE said the proposal "to impose BCD on solar cells and modules (without grandfathering of bid out projects) has been agreed to by the Ministry of Finance". According to the memorandum, the rate of BCD would be zero on solar modules as well as cells till March 31, 2022 and from April 1, 2022, the rate of BCD would be 40 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively. The ministry has directed to inform all RE (renewable energy) implementing agencies and other stakeholders to take note of the duty rates and to include provisions in their bid documents, so that bidders take these into account while quoting tariffs, in all bids where the last date of bid submission is subsequent to (issue of) this memorandum. India adds 3.2 GW solar capacity in 2020; lowest in 5 years: Report

India added 3,239 megawatt (MW) solar capacity in 2020, down 56 per cent from the previous year, according to a report. The adding of 3,239 MW of solar capacity was the lowest addition in five-years-time, Mercom India Research said in its report on Tuesday. "India added 3.2 GW or 3,239 MW of solar capacity in 2020, a 56 per cent decline year-over-year (YoY) compared to 7,346 MW installed in 2019," it said adding the country's total solar installed capacity was at 39 GW gigawatt (GW) as of December 2020. The large-scale solar projects accounted for 78 per cent of installations with 2,520 MW, registering a 60 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) decline. The addition of the remaining 719 MW rooftop installations was also down 22 per cent compared to the installation in 2019. Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat were the top three states for large-scale solar capacity additions, representing around 51 per cent of 2020 installations. Cabinet approves MoU with Uzbekistan for cooperation in solar energy

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave ex-post facto approval to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between India and Uzbekistan for cooperation in the field of solar energy. "The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was apprised of signing of Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) between India and Uzbekistan for cooperation in the field of solar energy," an official statement said. According to statement, the main area of work under the MoU is to identify research/demonstration/pilot projects between the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, India and the International Solar Energy Institute (ISEI), Uzbekistan in the mutually identified areas. These areas are solar photovoltaic, storage technologies and transfer of technology. Based on mutual agreement, both parties would work for implementation and deployment of pilot projects in International Solar Alliance (ISA) member countries.
