PSLV-C54 successfully places earth observation satellite into orbit

A Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle of ISRO on Saturday successfully injected the earth observation satellite (Oceansat) into a sun-synchronous orbit, Indian Space Research Organisation said on Saturday. The 44.4 metre tall rocket lifted off at a prefixed time at 11.56 am from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at this spaceport at the end of a 25.30-hour countdown. After reaching the intended orbit 17 minutes after PSLV-C54 lifted off, the Earth Observation Satellite or the Oceansat successfully separated from the rocket and was placed into orbit, ISRO chairman S Somanath said. Scientists would perform lowering of the rocket to place the other co-passenger satellites into a different orbit which is expected to take place in a two-hour duration. The Earth Observation Satellite-6 is the third-generation satellite in the Oceansat series. This is to provide continuity services of Oceansat-2 spacecraft with enhanced payload specifications as well as application areas.

PSLV to launch Pixxel's hyperspectral imaging satellite on Saturday

Spacetech startup Pixxel is set to launch its third hyperspectral satellite Anand onboard ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) from the Sriharikota spaceport on Saturday. Anand is a hyperspectral microsatellite weighing less than 15 kg but having more than 150 wavelengths that will enable it to capture images of the earth in greater detail than today's non-hyperspectral satellites that have not more than 10 wavelengths. The imagery from the satellite can be used to detect pest infestation, map forest fires, identify soil stress and oil slicks amongst other things, a statement from Pixxel said on Monday. "After more than 18 months of delay, many many retests, and more than two years of sweat and hard work by the team, we are finally launching this week," Awais Ahmed, Founder and CEO of Pixxel said on Twitter. Founded by Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal, Pixxel became the first Indian company ever to launch a commercial satellite Shakuntala in April using Elon Musk's SpaceX'

Centre deregulates uplinking of satellite TV channels, revises guidelines

The government on Wednesday unveiled revised uplinking and downlinking guidelines for satellite television channels that allows Indian teleports to uplink foreign channels and scraps permission for live telecast of events. The Guidelines for Uplinking and Downlinking of Satellite Television Channels in India, 2022, which have been approved by the Union Cabinet, also makes it mandatory for television channels to telecast content in national and public interest for 30 minutes every day, Information & Broadcasting Secretary Apurva Chandra told reporters here. He said the new guidelines have done away with permissions for live telecast of events. However, prior registration of events to be telecast live would be necessary, the guidelines said. The guidelines also allow a channel to be uplinked using facilities of more than one teleport/satellite as against only one teleport/satellite at present. The guidelines also make it mandatory for channels uplinking in frequency band other than .

Satellite communications to play key role in India's tech ambitions: MoS IT

Satellite communications is emerging as an important part of India's ambitions to scale up quality internet access across the country, Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Thursday. For the digital economy and India's growing clout in global technology landscape, satellite communications holds significant relevance, the minister said speaking at India Space Congress 2022. "Our goal...is by 2025-26 to have 1.2 billion Indians have the ability to connect to the internet directly through their device, and...role of satellite communications and space segment is an inherent part of this," Chandrasekhar said. At times, wireless technology may have limitations and "satellite is clearly emerging as an important part of the blueprint of delivering quality internet to all citizens and enterprises of India," he said. Satellite and space, therefore, will be important in the overall mission to ensure delivery of internet and goal of connecting people to the digital ...

Govt unveils new policy reforms for satellite communication services

The government on Wednesday unveiled new policy reforms for satellite communications services to ease procedures and streamline clearances to expedite the rollout of Satcom across the country, especially in remote areas. Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw exhorted the industry to increase tower deployments for a speedy 5G rollout. The current pace of tower deployment needs to increase from 2,500 towers a week to 10,000 towers per week, he said. The government has done its bit in ushering in reforms, and it is now up to the industry to show its commitment, the minister added.

OneWeb's 36 satellites arrive at Satish Dhawan Space Centre ahead of launch

OneWeb, the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications company, on Tuesday announced the arrival of 36 satellites at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC- SHAR) ahead of a planned launch from Sriharikota. OneWeb has teamed up with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of national space agency Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to facilitate the launch. With this launch, OneWeb will have over 70 per cent of its planned 'Gen 1 LEO constellation' in orbit as it progresses to deliver high-speed, low-latency connectivity services around the world, the company said in a statement. "The launch will be the company's 14th overall and the satellites will be put into orbit by the heaviest ISRO rocket, the GSLV-MkIII, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre," the statement said. An additional launch will take place this year, while three more launches are targeted for early next year to complete the constellation, OneWeb said. The company termed the upcoming launch as pivotal .

SpaceX, T-Mobile partner to try to connect remote areas with satellites

Elon Musk's SpaceX and T-Mobile are teaming up in an attempt to connect mobile devices through a network of satellites, providing coverage to even the most isolated places. Under the plan, T-Mobile's wireless network would be routed through SpaceX Starlink satellites that are in low Earth orbit. SpaceX launched 46 Starlink satellites into orbit in July, just two months after it launched 53 satellites into orbit, all from California. T-Mobile said that the vast majority of smartphones already on its network will be compatible with the new service using the device's existing radio. The companies are looking to provide text coverage, including SMS, MMS and participating messaging apps, nearly everywhere in the continental US, Hawaii, parts of Alaska, Puerto Rico and territorial waters starting with a beta in select areas by the end of next year. They want to add voice and data coverage at a later time. T-Mobile and SpaceX say they are ready to partner with other carriers to help exp
