Over 19,400 road accidents due to loss of control by driver in 2021: Report

A total of 19,478 road accidents occurred in 2021 due to loss of control by the driver due to inappropriate speed, distraction or misjudging a curve, which claimed 9,150 lives and injured 19,077 people, according to a report released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The report titled 'Road accidents in India -- 2021', said the nature of accident or collision types at aggregate national-level data shows an increase in 2021 compared to 2020. India's star cricketer Rishabh Pant had a miraculous escape after his luxury car crashed into a road divider and caught fire after he dozed off at the wheel on the Delhi-Dehradun highway in the early hours of Friday. Form special units to facilitate motor accident claims: SC to states

The Supreme Court has directed the states to constitute a special unit in police stations within three months to investigate and facilitate motor accident claim cases. Issuing a slew of directions, the top court said on receiving intimation about a road accident by a motor vehicle at a public place, the SHO concerned shall take steps as per Section 159 of the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act under which an Accident Information Report is to be filed to the Claims Tribunal within three months by the police. "In our view, the head of the Home Department of the State and the Director General of Police in all States/Union Territories shall ensure the compliance of the Rules by constituting a special unit in the police stations or at least at town level to investigate and facilitate the motor accident claim cases. 20 crash-prone zones identified as hit-and-run zones in 2021: Delhi Police

The Delhi Police identified 20 crash-prone zones as hit-and-run zones in the city in 2021, according to an official report. The criteria to identify such zones was based on three or more fatal crashes (hit-and-run cases) registered within the range of 500-metre diameter, the report released by the city police said. Shastri Park/IT Park, Punjabi Bagh Chowk, Mukarba Chowk, Seemapuri roundabout and Bhalswa Chowk reported four fatal crashes (hit and run) each. Similarly, Haider Pur Metro Station, Libaspur bus stand, Prem Bari pull, Rajdhani Park, Rama Road crossing, GTK Depot, Okhla More reported three fatal crashes (hit and run) each, the report stated. "Installation of CCTV cameras and stationing of CATs ambulances at these places can be effective in preventing fatalities. These are the places with high-speed corridors and the places where there is heavy vehicle movement during the night," it added.

Focus back on road crash deaths after Cyrus Mistry's fatal accident

The fatal road accident involving former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry on Sunday once again brought into focus the high number of deaths caused in such incidents every year in the country, with government data showing a record 1.55 lakh lives were lost in 2021. Mistry, 54, was killed this afternoon after his car hit a divider in Maharashtra's Palghar district when he was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in a Mercedes car. The accident took place around 3.15 pm on a bridge over the Surya river. It seems an accident, said Palghar Superintendent of Police Balasaheb Patil. According to National Crime Records Bureau data released recently, over 1.55 lakh people were killed in road crashes across India in 2021 -- an average of 426 daily or 18 every single hour. 4 children killed, 11 injured as jeep collides with truck in MP's Ujjain

Four school children were killed and 11 others injured after the jeep in which they were travelling collided head-on with a truck in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain district on Monday, a police official said. The accident took place near Jhirniya Fata in Unhel town when the children were on way to the Fatima Convent School, Nagda, Ujjain's Superintendent of Police Satyendra Shukla said.
