UK PM race in final countdown for Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss; result on Monday

The race to replace Boris Johnson as the Conservative Party leader and the British Prime Minister is in a final countdown stage on Friday, when voting officially closes for Tory members to choose between former Chancellor Rishi Sunak or Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. Sunak, 42, and Truss, 47, have gone head-to-head in a dozen hustings up and down the UK over the past month to win over the votes of an estimated 160,000 Tory electorate. While the British Indian former minister has pegged his campaign on getting a grip on soaring inflation as an immediate priority, the foreign minister has pledged tax cuts from day one in office. Overall, it is how they plan to tackle the cost-of-living crisis faced by the British public that has dominated the debates even as the duo addressed their final hustings in London on Wednesday night, where they reiterated many of their pledges. I have put restoring trust at the heart of the campaign, said Sunak, in response to a question about integrity and ...

Rishi Sunak closes campaign on personal note with parents, wife Akshata

Rishi Sunak struck a personal note in the final hustings event before the election for a new Conservative Party leader and British Prime Minister concludes, as he thanked his parents and wife Akshata Murty for their support. Addressing a teeming concert venue at Wembley in London on Wednesday night, the Indian-origin former Chancellor could have been mistaken for a rockstar amid the loud cheers and screams of Rishi, Rishi. Given the sharp contrast between his booming welcome and that of his rival, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, it was clear that at least for this audience Sunak was the winning candidate in the race to succeed Boris Johnson. This final hustings is special for me because the two people who inspired me to enter public service are actually here tonight my mum and dad, opened Sunak, as the cameras panned to the front row where his general practitioner father Yashvir and pharmacist mother Usha were seated with his wife Akshata. It was their example of service and what the

Rishi Sunak pledges to work 'night and day' as UK PM race enters finale

Rishi Sunak pledged to work "night and day" for the best country in the world as the election campaign to take over from Boris Johnson as the Conservative Party leader and the new British Prime Minister entered its final stage on Wednesday, with the very last hustings event set for London. Sunak reiterated his vision statement as the first British Indian to run for the top job at 10 Downing Street ahead of the final campaign event scheduled at a popular concert venue in Wembley on Wednesday evening. The former Chancellor will go head-to-head with his rival Foreign Secretary Liz Truss for one last time as they fight it out for any remaining Tory members yet to cast their ballots before voting closes on Friday evening. The 42-year-old former finance minister, who has focussed his campaign message on the urgency of getting a grip on inflation and countered 47-year-old Truss' claims that tax cuts are the answer to address the cost-of-living crisis crippling the UK economy, made a ...

UK PM race: Rishi Sunak camp accuses Liz Truss of avoiding scrutiny

With just days to go before the polls close on Friday in the race to replace Boris Johnson as Conservative Party leader and British Prime Minister, former Chancellor Rishi Sunak's camp accused rival Liz Truss of avoiding scrutiny on Tuesday. Foreign Secretary Truss, who is the current frontrunner according to pre-poll surveys and bookie's odds, was due to face tough questions from veteran BBC political journalist Nick Robinson in a one-on-one interview already done by Sunak earlier this month. But the Cabinet minister pulled out of the interview hours before it was to air on Tuesday evening, with her team saying she could no longer spare the time. "Liz Truss has cancelled her BBC One interview with Nick Robinson which was due to air this Tuesday evening (30th August) at 7pm. Ms Truss' team say she can no longer spare the time to appear on Our Next Prime Minister', the BBC said in a statement. "The other candidate for the Conservative leadership, Rishi Sunak, was interviewed by Nick

Want to change UK-India relationship, make it 'more two-way': Rishi Sunak

Britain's prime ministerial candidate Rishi Sunak said he wants to change the UK-India relationship to make it a more two-way exchange that opens up easy access to UK students and companies in India. During a campaign hustings event hosted by the Conservative Friends of India (CFIN) diaspora organisation in north London on Monday evening, the former Chancellor greeted the largely British Indian gathering with a mix of traditional greetings such as namaste, salaam, khem cho, and kidda. He even broke into Hindi: Aap sab mere parivar ho (you all are my family)." We know the UK-India relationship is important. We represent the living bridge between our two countries, he said, in response to a question about bilateral ties from CFIN co-chair Reena Ranger. We are all very aware of the opportunity for the UK to sell things and do things in India, but actually we need to look at that relationship differently because there is an enormous amount that we here in the UK can learn from India,"

Underdogs don't give up, says Rishi Sunak's new campaign video for UK PM

Two weeks before the UK's Conservative Party leadership election is set to draw to a close, finalist Rishi Sunak's team are promoting a new campaign video cashing in on his "underdog" status with rival Liz Truss' firm lead in the race to succeed Boris Johnson. The video, first used to introduce Sunak at a hustings event in Manchester on Friday night, shows the former Chancellor at a series of campaign events since the race began last month and addressing Tory members who are voting for a new party leader to take charge as British Prime Minister on September 5. "I'll keep fighting for every vote until the final day," Sunak tweeted with the video, which counts down 100 events in 30 days to reach 16,000 party members on the campaign trail. The video shows the 42-year-old British Indian former minister interacting with voters and is also seen catching a quick power nap on a bench as a voiceover praises his efforts to "fight for every inch". "They say beware the underdog, because an ...

Rishi Sunak takes time out of campaigning, visits temple on Janmashtami

Britain's prime ministerial candidate, Rishi Sunak, took some time out of a hectic campaign schedule to make a visit to a Hare Krishna temple on the outskirts of London to celebrate Janmashtami. Sunak, 42, who swore his oath of allegiance on being elected member of Parliament in the House of Commons on the Bhagavad Gita', has often spoken about his Hindu faith giving him strength. On Thursday, he was accompanied by wife Akshata Murty, daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy and author-philanthropist Sudha Murty, for darshan at Bhaktivedanta Manor in Watford, Hertfordshire. Today I visited the Bhaktivedanta Manor temple with my wife Akshata to celebrate Janmashtami, in advance of the popular Hindu festival celebrating Lord Krishna's birthday, Sunak tweeted with an image of the couple offering prayers. Bhaktivedanta Manor is one of the UK's leading International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) hubs, which was famously donated by Beatles musician George Harrison. The

Rishi Sunak pledges major civil service overhaul if elected UK PM

Rishi Sunak, the British Indian former Chancellor in the race to be elected the British Prime Minister, on Tuesday pledged a major overhaul of the country's civil service to create a sharper, leaner bureaucracy if he takes charge at 10 Downing Street on September 5. Sunak, who is up against Foreign Secretary Liz Truss in the Conservative Party leadership election to succeed Boris Johnson, wants civil servants to spend at least a year of their career outside government roles in industry to widen their experience. Under a Sunak-led government, they will no longer receive pay rewards based on the longevity of their service but performance instead. As Chancellor, I saw parts of the British Civil Service at its best, delivering world class COVID support schemes in record time. But the bloated post-COVID state is in need of a shake up so I will create a sharper, leaner civil service, said Sunak. I'll press ahead with cuts to back office Civil Service headcount, recruiting and retaining t

Liz Truss holds firm lead over Rishi Sunak in UK PM race: Tory survey

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is holding on to a firm lead over former Chancellor Rishi Sunak in the race to be elected Conservative Party leader and British Prime Minister, according to a new survey of Tory voters on Wednesday. The Conservative Home website survey of 961 party members, who either already have or will be casting their postal or online ballots in the leadership election, found Truss at 60 per cent and Sunak at 28 per cent. Once the 9 per cent who fall under the "don't know" category are equally distributed between the two finalists in the contest, Truss maintains a 32-point lead over the British Indian ex-minister as the website's last survey found earlier this month. "If our don't knows are divided evenly between the two candidates, an exercise we carried out last time, Truss goes up to 64 per cent and Sunak to 32 per cent and so maintains the 32 point lead she had last time round, Conservative Home said in an analysis of its latest findings. "The sum of Opinium, ..
