Lies, slander part of Rahul's politics, people will punish him: Nadda

BJP president J P Nadda Friday claimed that Rahul Gandhi has a habit of levelling fabricated allegations having no connection with facts while alleging the Congress leader has a "huge arrogance but little understanding". In a series of tweets amid a political fight between the BJP and the Congress following Gandhi's conviction in a defamation case over the "Modi surname" remarks, Nadda alleged that "lies, personal slander and negative politics is integral" to his politics. People's "punishment" to him will be more severe in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls than in 2019 when he lost in Amethi and the Congress was routed nationally, the BJP leader said. He said, "By comparing OBC communities to thieves, Rahul Gandhi has shown a pathetic and casteist mindset. However, his latest tirade is not surprising. For the last many years, he has always reduced levels of political discourse." Nadda said he repeatedly ignored suggestions from the court and the community to tender an apology for his ...

Sharad Pawar backs Rahul, says jail term attempt to suppress Opposition

NCP supremo Sharad Pawar came out in support of Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, saying his conviction in a criminal defamation case was an attempt to "suppress the voice" of opposition leaders. Pawar also drew parallels between the conviction of Gandhi and NCP leader and former Lok Sabha member from Lakshadweep P P Mohammed Faizal, who was disqualified from the lower house after his conviction in an attempt-to-murder case. "I express my serious concerns at the attempts to curtail fundamental rights, freedom of speech and democratic expression in the country. The repeated attempts to suppress the voice of political parties, leaders and citizens of India is a matter of grave concern," Pawar said. "Today's judgment of Rahul Gandhi underscores the point. NCP MP P P Mohammed Faizal's case is also a similar case in point. I deplore this new trend in our political landscape, which should concern everyone in today's scenario," the Rajya Sabha member said. Faizal was disqualified as member of the

Rahul Gandhi will not be disqualified as MP if conviction stayed: Experts

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will not be disqualified as a member of parliament if the appellate court stays the conviction and suspends the two- year jail term awarded to him by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his alleged "Modi surname" remarks, legal experts said on Thursday. Senior lawyer and constitutional law expert Rakesh Dwivedi referred to the apex court's 2013 and 2018 judgements in the Lily Thomas and the Lok Prahari matters respectively and said suspension of sentence and stay of conviction were necessary to escape disqualification as a lawmaker under the Representation of the People (RP) Act. "The appellate court can suspend the conviction and the sentence and grant him bail. In that case there will be no disqualification," he said, adding "However the politicians must choose their words carefully to avoid getting entangled with law." The debate over possibilities of Gandhi being disqualified as an MP must take note of the legal position enumerated

Law will catch up with motormouths' sooner than later: NCP tells BJP

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday said while Bharatiya Janta Party leaders slam Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his conviction, the same rule applies to BJP leaders because the law will catch up with motormouths sooner than later. A court in Surat in Gujarat on Thursday sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in a 2019 criminal defamation case filed against him over his Modi surname remarks. BJP leaders are saying that #RahulGandhi must learn a lesson from his conviction by #SuratCourt and choose his words before speaking. The same applies to motor-mouths of the #BJP because our Judiciary is Supreme, and it will catch up with them too, sooner rather than later, NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto tweeted. In a swipe at Gandhi for his comments after the conviction that he believes in truth and non-violence, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad asked if this means insulting people by targeting them for their surname. Does Congress want Rahul Gandhi to have complete freedom to abuse .
