BJP says Rahul Gandhi insulted India abroad; twisting statement: Congress

Hitting back at the BJP over its criticism of Rahul Gandhi's remarks in the UK, the Congress on Tuesday said the ruling party is "rattled" whenever he speaks and was resorting to distorting, twisting and lying on his comments. The Congress' attack came after Ravi Shankar Prasad, a former Union minister, lashed out at Gandhi for his criticism of the state of democracy in India and the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh). At a press conference, the BJP leader also accused Gandhi of seeking the intervention of Europe and the US in India, and said he has gone against the consensus in India against any interference in its internal affairs by foreign powers. "Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad is doing what he and his Supremo do best-- distort, twist, defame and lie with a straight face," Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet. Tagging a media report on Prasad's remarks, Congress' media department head Pawan Khera said on Twitter, "There is nothing more amusing than watching an ...

BJP likes to believe it will be in power eternally: Rahul Gandhi in London

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) likes to believe it will be in power in India eternally but that is not the case, and to say the Congress is "gone" is a ridiculous idea, Opposition MP Rahul Gandhi said in London on Monday. Addressing an in-conversation session at the Chatham House think tank on Monday evening to round off his week-long UK tour, Gandhi also pinpointed the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's lack of focus on a shifting nature of the political discourse in India as the key factor behind its failure. "To put it in perspective, if you look at the time from independence to now, the Congress party has been in power for the majority of the time," he said. "Before the BJP was in power for 10 years, we were in power for 10 years. The BJP likes to believe that they have come to power in India and they are going to be in power eternally, that is not the case," the Congress leader added. The BJP-led government came to power in India in 2014. Gandhi, th

Don't betray India, says Anurag Thakur to Rahul Gandhi, Congress leaders

Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Monday hit out at Rahul Gandhi for his remarks seeking intervention from the US and European nations over "disappearing" democracy in India and asked the Congress leader not to betray the nation. "Don't betray India, Rahul Gandhi ji. The objections to India's foreign policy is an evidence of your scant understanding of the issue. No one will believe the lies you spread about India from foreign soil," Thakur told reporters here. Speaking at a function in London, Gandhi alleged that the structures of Indian democracy were under "brutal attack" and regretted that democratic parts of the world, including the US and Europe, have failed to notice it. "His party had done it earlier, when it took local issues to the United Nations, and now to ask other countries to intervene in India. They have not yet come out of the thought of slavery," the Information and Broadcasting Minister said. Thakur said Gandhi has resorted to "maligning India" from foreign soil as

Rahul's attack on BJP, says it's a fight between courage and cowardice

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched a fresh attack on BJP, saying he is not afraid of the criticism against him as he asserted that it's a fight between courage and cowardice, and love and hatred. Gandhi, who is in London as part of a week-long visit to the UK, made the remarks during his interaction with the Indian diaspora, organised by the Indian Overseas Congress here. "The more they attack me, the better that is for me, because the more I understand... This is a fight between courage and cowardice. It's a fight between respect and disrespect. It's a fight between love and hatred Gandhi said. He said his 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' was demonstrating to the whole country what the real India is about. "What Indian values are? What our religions tell us? What our different languages tell us? What our different cultures tell us (that) we are one country with many, many different ideas. And we have the capability of living together harmoniously without hatred without anger withou

Structures of our democracy under 'brutal attack', alleges Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday alleged that the structures of Indian democracy are under "brutal attack" and there are conversations ongoing within the Opposition to unite around an alternative vision for the country. The former Congress president also alleged that the recent tax survey action against the BBC was an example of the "suppression of voice across the country", which is why he undertook the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' as an expression of voice against the ruling BJP's attempt to silence the country. "The reason the yatra became necessary is because the structures of our democracy are under brutal attack," Gandhi told reporters at an India Insights event organised by the Indian Journalists' Association (IJA) here. "The media, the institutional frameworks, judiciary, Parliament is all under attack and we were finding it very difficult to put the voice of the people through the normal channels, he said. "The BBC has found out about it now, but it has been going on in Ind

Rahul Gandhi unable to accept poll defeats, maligning India: Anurag Thakur

Union minister Anurag Thakur on Friday hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his claims of being under surveillance by intelligence agencies and accused him of maligning India on foreign soil after facing successive electoral setbacks. Thakur wondered what prevented Gandhi and other Congress leaders from submitting their phones to a Supreme Court-appointed technical committee that probed the Pegasus snooping issue. Thakur's remarks came after Gandhi claimed in a speech at the Cambridge University that Indian democracy was under threat and that several politicians, including himself, were under surveillance using Israeli spyware Pegasus. "We can understand his hatred towards the prime minister, but the conspiracy to malign the country on foreign soil with the help of foreign friends raises questions on the agenda of the Congress," Thakur, the information and broadcasting minister, told reporters here. Thakur said Gandhi was aware of the electoral rout the Congress was facing

Indian democracy under attack, politicians under surveillance: Rahul Gandhi

Indian democracy is under threat, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said during a lecture at Cambridge University, claiming that several politicians, including himself, are under surveillance. Gandhi made the comments during his lecture on "Learning to Listen in the 21st Century", which was shared on Twitter by Congress leader Sam Pitroda, ex-adviser to former prime minister Manmohan Singh. Raking up the Pegasus snooping issue, Gandhi alleged that the Israeli spyware was installed on the phones of a large number of politicians, including him. "Indian democracy is under pressure and under attack. The institutional framework which is required for a democracy... Parliament, free press, the judiciary, just the idea of mobilisation--these are all getting constrained. We are facing an attack on the basic structure of democracy," he said. Gandhi noted that in the Constitution, India is described as a Union of States and that Union requires negotiation and conversation. "It is that ...
