Covid-19: Two more Omicron variant cases reported in Chandigarh

Two more people, including an 80-year-old man, were found to be infected with Omicron, taking the total cases of the latest variant of coronavirus reported in the city so far to three. Of the three cases, two have been discharged and there is now only one active Omicron case in the city, according to an official statement. It stated that samples of five family contacts of the previous Omicron positive case were sent for genome sequencing to the National Centre for Disease Control in Delhi. Two of these were found to be positive for the Omicron variant, it said. Of these two, the 80-year old male suffers from hypertension. However, he is asymptomatic and has been isolated in a hospital, the statement said. It said the octogenarian was tested on December 24 and was found positive for the omicron variant. He will be re-tested on January 1, the statement said. The other Omicron positive case was a 45-year-old man. He tested negative for coronavirus on December 24 and was discharged,

Man killed in Ludhiana blast identified, was a dismissed Punjab cop: Report

The man killed in the Ludhiana district court blast is learnt to have been identified as Gagandeep Singh, a Punjab Police head constable who was dismissed from service. Singh was a resident of Khanna in Ludhiana and was dismissed from the post of head constable in connection with a drugs-related case in 2019, police sources said. Police had earlier said they suspect that the man killed in the blast on the second-floor toilet of the court complex was trying to assemble or plant the explosive device. Singh's family in Khanna is also learnt to have identified him, the sources said. The SIM card of the deceased is believed to have helped identify him. The explosion took place in the court complex on Thursday, killing Singh and injuring six others, prompting the Punjab government to declare a high alert in the state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah was briefed about a blast in Ludhiana on Thursday that killed a person and injured six others, and the overall situation in Punjab, officials said. Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla briefed Shah about the blast inside the Ludhiana district court complex and the overall law-and-order situation in Punjab. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sought a detailed report on the blast from the Punjab government, an official said. In a communication, the MHA asked the state government to send the report as early as possible.
