Pune Airport to stay closed for fourteen days starting Saturday

Pune airport will remain closed for fourteen days from October 16 to October 29 to complete the runway resurfacing work."Flight operations will remain completely closed from tomorrow till October 29 and it will resume from October 30," Pune Airport Director Santosh Dhoke told ANI.Indian Air Force (IAF), which manages the runway operations, said that due to rapidly deteriorating condition of the runway and associated operating sufaces at the Air Force Station, Pune, the runway resurfacing had become urgent.Partial closure of the runway was done for 12 hours daily during night from October 26, 2020 to October 25, 2021 for the works, in order to cause the least disturbance to civil aviation."A 14-day complete closure was planned from April 26 till May 9, 2021 to undertake the resurfacing of the central bitumen portion of the runway. However, due to emergent requirement of transport of COVID-19 vaccines, The Ministry of Defence had directed to defer the complete closure of runway," IAF .

Pune stadium to be named after Olympic Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra

A stadium in the premises of Army Sports Institute in Pune is to be named after Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra.The stadium will be named as 'Neeraj Chopra Army Sports Stadium' in Pune Cantt.The official naming ceremony of the stadium is scheduled for August 23 and will be carried out by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Singh will be accompanied by the Army chief General M M Narvane and Lieutenant Governer JS Nain on this tour.On his visit, Singh will facilitate the other sixteen Olympians and will be carrying out a naming ceremony of the stadium. He will also be addressing the troops and will interact with budding sportsmen.Neeraj's historic golden throw in the Olympics has been listed as one of the 10 magical moments of athletics (track and field) in the Tokyo Olympics by World Athletics.He has been felicitated by the Indian Government, the Sports Ministry, the Athletic Federation of India as well as the Indian Army post his return.

Pune: 18 dead in fire at chemical firm, rescuers search for missing staff

At least five workers were killed and a dozen others were missing after a major fire broke out at a chemicalcompany located in an industrial area in Pune district on Monday, officials said. According to the officials from the fire department of PMRDA (Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority), at leastsix fire tenders were sent to the plant of SVS Aqua Technologies in the Pirangut MIDC area in Mulshi tehsil to douse the flames. "According to company officials, at least17 of their workers were missing after the blaze broke out. "We have so far recovered five bodies and a search for theothers employees is underway," saidDevendra Potphode, chief fire officer, PMRDA Fire Services. He said the firm is into manufacturing, supply and export of air, water and surface treatment chemicals.
