Barmer rape case: NCW Chairperson writes to Rajasthan DGP for investigation

National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the Director General of Police (DGP) Rajasthan regarding a fair and time-bound investigation in Barmer rape case.The matter pertains to April 6, when a Dalit woman was allegedly raped and set on fire in Rajasthan's Barmer district. The victim succumbed to burn injuries at Jaipur's Mahatma Gandhi Hospital on Saturday, police said.The incident occurred on Thursday in an area under Pachpadra police station limits, Barmer district.The main accused has been identified as Shakoor and has been arrested, police said.In her letter to DGP Rajasthan, NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma said to conduct a fair and time-bound investigation in the matter and if the allegations levelled are found to be true, an FIR should be filed under relevant provisions of law.Meanwhile, the state BJP formed a three-member committee pertaining to the case. Parents' support key to stop violence in live-in relationships: NCW chief

Parents should be supportive of their children in live-in relationships so that they do not hesitate to share their thoughts and feelings, NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma said on Friday, amid the recent horrific murders of women by their live-in partners in the country. Pointing out the recent cases of brutal murders by partners in live-in relationships, National Commission for Women (NCW) chief said that it was seen in these cases that parents were not supportive of their children being in a live-in relationship. "In Nikky Yadav's case, the man's parents were putting pressure on him to get married. The parents must support their child's choice and respect it. NCW seeks report from Delhi Police commissioner in Nikki Yadav murder case

The NCW has sought a report from Delhi police on the killing of a woman allegedly by her live-in partner in Delhi. A 24-year-old man allegedly strangled his live-in partner with a mobile phone cable in February 10 and hid her body in a refrigerator in his dhaba on the outskirts of Mitraon village in southwest Delhi. According to police, the accused, Sahil Gehlot, married a woman the same day he killed his girlfriend, Nikki Yadav. Sources from the National Commission for Women said the body has sought a report from the Delhi Police commissioner on the matter. "How heartless a person can be? Not only he killed his live-in partner but got married to another girl the same day. What is the role of parents that we need to look into also have to work out on the mindset of families who think children are their properties," tweeted NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma.

NCW received nearly 31,000 complaints of crimes against women in 2022

Nearly 31,000 complaints of crimes committed against women were received by the National Commission for Women (NCW) in 2022, the highest since 2014. In 2021, the NCW had received 30,864 complaints while in 2022, the number slightly increased to 30,957. Of the 30,957 complaints, the maximum of 9,710 were related to the right to live with dignity that takes into account the emotional abuse of women, followed by those related to domestic violence at 6,970 and dowry harassment at 4,600, according to NCW data accessed by PTI. About 54.5 per cent (16,872) of the complaints were received from the most populous state of Uttar Pradesh. Delhi recorded 3,004 complaints, followed by Maharashtra (1,381), Bihar (1,368) and Haryana (1,362). According to the data, the highest number of complaints related to the right to live with dignity and domestic violence were received from Uttar Pradesh. AAP Gujarat unit president Gopal Italia on Thursday appeared before the National Commission for Women (NCW) following his alleged comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi amid protests by party members outside the women's panel's office here. NCW seeks explanation from Chhattisgarh minister over remarks on BJP MP

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has sought an explanation from a Chhattisgarh minister for his inappropriate remarks on a woman BJP Member of Parliament (MP) from the state and asked him to apologise for the comments. Chhattisgarh Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu had last week made a remark purportedly referring to the looks of Saroj Pandey, a BJP Rajya Sabha member from Chhattisgarh, after she raised the issue of dilapidated condition of roads in the Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh. Jharkhand: Woman burnt alive by jilted lover; NCW seeks action taken report

The Jharkhand government on Monday handed over a compensation of Rs 9 lakh to the next of kin of a teenager, who was set on fire by a man in Jharkhand's Dumka district recently, an official said. The Class 12 student succumbed to her burn injuries at a government hospital here on Sunday. The National Commission for Women during the day sought an action taken report from the police within seven days. Chief Minister Hemant Soren directed the Dumka district administration to extend an immediate relief of Rs 10 lakh to the bereaved family.
