NCP's Ajit Pawar accuses govt of fiscal indiscipline, targets Fadnavis

Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Ajit Pawar on Tuesday accused the state government of financial indiscipline after it tabled a more than Rs 52,000 crore supplementary demand last week. He also pointed out that the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party government does not have a single woman minister. You have breached fiscal discipline, Pawar said, noting that when he was finance minister in the previous Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP and Congress government, he had presented a budget of Rs 5,60,000 crore in March 2022. The Eknath Shinde government came to power in June. Devendra Fadnavis, his successor in the finance ministry, presented his first supplementary demand of Rs 25,000 crore in an earlier session and the second demand of record Rs 52,000 crore last week, Pawar pointed out. If a third demand is tabled, the total could go up to Rs 1 lakh crore or around 20 per cent of the original budget tabled in March, he said. You (Fadnavis) keep ...

Maha decision to collect data on inter-faith couples a retrograde step: NCP

The Nationalist Congress Party on Wednesday said the Maharashtra government's decision to look into issues only of women in inter-faith and inter-caste marriages shows signs of a prejudiced mindset and is a "retrograde" step. The state government has set up a committee to gather information on the inter-faith and inter-caste marriage couples and maternal families of women involved if they are estranged. The panel head and state minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha said the move is aimed at avoiding a repeat of the Shraddha Walkar case. Walkar, a resident of Vasai in Maharashtra, was allegedly killed by her live-in partner Aaftab Poonawala in their Delhi flat. He allegedly chopped her body into multiple pieces before disposing of them over several weeks. NCP national spokesperson Clyde Crasto said it is good the government has plans to provide a platform for women who are in inter-caste or inter-faith marriages to access counselling and resolve issues with their families, especially those w

NCP must work to fill political vacuum in Maharashtra, says Pawar

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar on Thursday said his party was capable of filling the political vacuum in Maharashtra and asked the state leadership to work on building the next generation of leaders. Addressing the state party executive meeting, Pawar said there is always a political vacuum (in any state), which was filled by the Bharatiya Janata Party in Gujarat and the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi. "Such a vacuum exists in Maharashtra and NCP can fill it by emerging as an alternative. We have to work to unite all forces which oppose the BJP's ideology," Pawar said. Even though civic and local body polls are delayed, the NCP leadership in the state shouldn't be complacent and must utilise this time to encourage a new breed of leadership, the former Union minister said. It was NCP which took the lead to organise a protest against the state government scheduled on December 17 in Mumbai, Pawar asserted. Speaking on the simmering border row with Karnataka, Pawar

NCP slams Maha govt, BJP and Centre for 'silence' on Karnataka CM's remarks

The Nationalist Congress Party on Saturday questioned the "eerie silence" of the Maharashtra government, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Centre on the "uncalled for" statements made by Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on the border dispute between the two states, which it claimed brought the differences to the fore again. Bommai had recently sought a merger of "Kannada-speaking" areas in Maharashtra's Akkalkot and Solapur and had also said some villages in Jat taluka in Sangli district wanted to join the southern state. A day earlier, he said the visit of Maharashtra ministers Chandrakant Patil and Shambhuraj Desai to Belgaum was not good in the given situation. Maharashtra and Karnataka have been involved in a long-standing border dispute, with the former seeking administrative control of Marathi-speaking Belgaum and some other villages of the neighbouring state. "'Why is an eerie silence being maintained by the Central government, BJP and CM of Maharashtra on the ...

NCP mocks Maha CM Shinde, says his future lies in Fadnavis' hands

The Nationalist Congress Party on Friday ridiculed Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for reportedly meeting an astrologer and said superstition would not help him as his future lay in the hands of his deputy Devendra Fadnavis. Shinde's rebellion in June had brought down the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government, and he was sworn in as chief minister with the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has a far higher number of legislators than his faction. As per reports, Shinde went to meet an astrologer to learn about his future but the fact is his future seems to lie in the hands of Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis, said NCP national spokesperson Clyde Crasto. "This is visible in their behaviour in the past few months since their government was formed. It is evident who is calling the shots," Crasto said.

Chhatrapati Shivaji remarks row: NCP asks President to act against governor

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Monday wrote to President Droupadi Murmu seeking action against Maharashtra Governor B S Koshyari for his remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Koshyari had said Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was an icon of the "olden days", a comment that triggered a political storm in Maharashtra, with activists of NCP, Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), and other organisations staging protests for his ouster. In a letter addressed to the President, NCP's chief spokesperson Mahesh Tapase alleged the governor has on numerous occasions made controversial remarks and statements that hurt the sentiments of the people of Maharashtra and this conduct was unacceptable. "The office of the governor is an important institution as enshrined in our Constitution and not only the popular government of the state, but the entire population looks up to the governor as the protector of their Constitutional rights," Tapase wrote. However on numerous occasions i

NCP's lone Gujarat MLA Kandhal Jadeja resigns after ticket denial

The Nationalist Congress Party's lone Gujarat MLA Kandhal Jadeja resigned from the party on Monday after it denied him a ticket for the upcoming state Assembly polls. Jadeja had filed his nomination on November 11 despite not having a mandate from the party. He won from Kutiyana seat in Porbandar district in 2012 and 2017 on the NCP's ticket, but this time the seat has been kept out of the Congress-NCP alliance. Elections for the 182-member Gujarat Assembly will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5. In the first phase, voting will be held in 89 seats, including Kutiyana, while voting for the remaining 93 seats will be held on December 5. The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) entered into a pre-poll alliance for the next month's Gujarat Assembly elections, as part of which the Sharad Pawar-led party will contest three of the total 182 seats in the state, the leaders of the two parties announced here on Friday. Replicate Morbi hospital makeover plan in all govt hospitals in India: NCP

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Wednesday took a swipe at the Centre and said it must replicate the Morbi Civil Hospital's "overnight makeover plan" across all government hospitals in the country and call it the 'Gujarat Hospital Model'. The comments came after the hospital in Gujarat's Morbi city was spruced up ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit there on Tuesday to meet those injured in the suspension bridge collapse which claimed 135 lives. Workers were seen cleaning and painting a portion of the hospital ahead of the PM's visit. NCP national spokesman Clyde Crasto in a statement said that a day before the PM's visit, there were visuals of the Morbi Civil Hospital getting a "complete makeover" and being made to look neat, clean and modern to welcome him. Government authorities in Morbi took the PM's visit so seriously that they even replaced malfunctioning drinking water dispensers with new drinking water coolers, he claimed. They worked so diligently that the

NCP president Sharad Pawar admitted to hospital after feeling uneasy

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar was admitted to a private hospital in Mumbai on Monday after he felt uneasy, a party functionary said. The 81-year-old Rajya Sabha member will remain in the hospital for next couple of days and later attend a party meeting scheduled to begin on November 3, NCP's general secretary Shivajirao Garje said in a statement. After the veteran politician complained of uneasiness, he was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital on the advice of his physician, he said. He will remain in the hospital for three days and is expected to be discharged on November 2. He will attend the party's two-day meeting scheduled to begin on November 3, Garje said. Declare wet drought in Maharashtra, give assistance to farmers: NCP's Sule

Nationalist Congress Party Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule on Thursday demanded that the Maharashtra government declare a 'wet drought' in the state to give relief to farmers facing losses due to heavy rains. "The excess rainfall in various parts of Maharashtra damaged the crops and turned farms into lakes. It is my request to Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde and deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to declare wet drought in the state," the Baramati MP tweeted. Diwali was a "dark period" for farmers as produce could not harvested in time and rotted, she further said. "The state should positively consider making direct financial assistance to farmers along with announcing wet drought, Sule added. Heavy rains in several parts of western and central Maharashtra last week damaged Kharif crops, which were stored in the open after cutting or were ready for harvesting.
