Naveen Patnaik, the founder of Biju Janata Dal (BJD), is currently the chief minister of Odisha. The son of former CM Biju Patnaik, Naveen is the only CM who does not speak the language of the state. He is in his fourth term at the helm of the state government.

Odisha CM disburses Rs 3,000 each to 3.1 mn families for house repair

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Friday disbursed financial assistance of Rs 3,000 each to the beneficiaries of the Biju Pucca Ghar Yojana (BPGY) towards repair of their houses. Total assistance of Rs 1,444 crore was directly credited to the bank accounts of 31 lakh families, Patnaik said. The state government will soon provide Rs 5,000 each to the 12.25 lakh households who have been denied a pucca house under the Pradham Mantri Aawas Yojana (Gramin), the chief minister said. Bank account details are being collected and they will be given Rs 5,000 each to repair their houses, he said. The state government is committed to its pledge taken in 2014 to convert all kutcha houses to pucca houses, Patnaik said. Though houses in 14 districts were damaged in cyclone Fani in 2019, the affected people are yet to get any assistance under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) till date, he said. Industry body seeks Odisha CM's intervention in resolving coal shortage

An industry body has sought the intervention of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in resolving the acute coal shortage faced by captive power plants in the state. The Utkal Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ltd (UCCI) said the paucity due to curtailment of coal supplies since August was a threat to the survival of the local industry, leading to loss of lakhs of jobs. Industries that rely on captive power plants (CPP) in Odisha are facing alarmingly depleted coal stocks of only two-three days as compared to the prescribed level of 15 days, UCCI president Brahma Mishra said. Over 65 per cent of the coal in Odisha is being supplied by the Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) to power plants in other states, resulting in local industries facing coal deficit, Mishra said in a letter to Patnaik, urging him to take steps to bring normalcy. The acute coal shortage due to the diversion of the supply has brought down the CPP-based industries, and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to a .

Odisha CM asks officials to prepare for Covid third wave on war-footing

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed officials to make preparations on a war-footing to deal with a possible third wave of COVID-19 with at least eight omicron cases detected in the state. In a meeting on Monday, where he took stock of the state's preparedness to deal with the pandemic, Patnaik issued a series of directives to government departments, calling for the same level of readiness as was there during the first and second waves. The chief minister said that though only eight omicron cases have so far been detected in the state, there could be a surge in the coming days. He directed officials to ensure that all eligible persons are provided with the Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) smart health cards within a week. He also told district collectors and superintendents of police to ensure its success, and especially monitor private hospitals to make sure they treat the beneficiaries of BSKY.
