Amid rising Monkeypox cases, South African Minister expresses concern

Monkeypox virus remains a cause for concern to South Africa, Health Minister Joe Phaahla said on Friday, amid rising number of cases in the country. Although monkeypox causes less severe illness, the current rising numbers and the positive cases has become a cause of concern and therefore, we cannot ignore it," Phaahla told media here. I'm saying this because on August 17 we got a report from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) that we have had our fifth positive case of monkeypox, which was in a 28-year-old male from Johannesburg with a travel history of Europe, the Netherlands and Spain as well, Phaahla said. Phaahla said that at this stage no link has been established between these five cases, but the NICD is investigating a possible link between the last two cases as both persons infected had been to Spain, which has already recorded 5,000 positive cases and two deaths resulting from monkeypox. The minister emphasised that the four earlier cases had been mil

EU regulator approves plan to increase monkeypox vaccine supplies

A smaller dose of the monkeypox vaccine appears to still be effective and can be used to stretch the current supply by five times, the European Medicines Agency said Friday, echoing a recommendation made earlier this month by the US Food and Drug Administration. The EU drug regulator said in a statement that injecting people with just one fifth the regular dose of the smallpox vaccine made by Bavarian Nordic appeared to produce similar levels of antibodies against monkeypox as a full dose. The approach calls for administering Bavarian Nordic's vaccine with an injection just under the skin rather than into deeper tissue, a practice that may stimulate a better immune response. People still need to get two doses, about four weeks apart. The EMA said national authorities could decide, as a temporary measure to use smaller doses of the vaccine to protect vulnerable people during the ongoing monkeypox outbreak. EU health commissioner Stella Kyriakides said the decision would allow the ..

Africa CDC says renaming of monkeypox variants by WHO will curb stigma

The head of Africa's public health agency says he's really pleased that the World Health Organisation is renaming the strains of the monkeypox disease to remove references to African regions amid concerns about stigmatisation. The variant of the disease formerly known as the Congo Basin is now called Clade 1 and what was previously known as the West Africa clade is now called Clade 2, the U.N. health agency announced last week, saying it will hold an open forum to rename monkeypox altogether. We are very glad that now we can be able to call them Clade 1 and Clade 2 rather than make reference to these variants using African regions, Ahmed Ogwell, acting director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, said at a briefing Thursday. "We are really pleased with that change in naming, which will remove stigma from disease-causing variants. More monkeypox deaths have been reported on the African continent this year than anywhere in the world. A total of 3,232 cases, ...
