NCERT issues guidelines to identify mental health problems in students

Setting up of a mental health advisory panel, school based mental health programme and pedagogical support to ensure mental well- being of students and engaging parents are among the guidelines issued by NCERT for schools. The guidelines for "Early identification and intervention for mental health problems in school going children and adolescents" have been released by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) following a mental health survey among school children. The survey report launched last week cited exams, results and peer pressure among major factors for stress and anxiety among school students. Poor mental health of employees costs Indian firms $14 bn yearly: Survey

Poor mental health amongst employees costs Indian employers around USD 14 billion annually in absenteeism, lower productivity and attrition, according to Deloitte's Mental Health Survey. Over the years, mental health issues have seen a steady rise globally, accentuated further by the onset of COVID-19. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), India accounts for nearly 15 per cent of the global mental health burden. To analyse the current state of mental well-being amongst Indian employees, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP (DTTILLP) undertook a survey titled 'Mental health and well-being in the workplace', it said in a statement. The survey dives into the top stressors from an employee's perspective, along with an estimate of the yearly economic cost to Indian companies arising from poor employee mental health. Around 47 per cent of professionals surveyed consider workplace-related stress as the biggest factor affecting their mental health, followed by financial and COVID-19

Health ministers of WHO South-East Asia Region to discuss priority issues

WHO officials and ministers from south-east region will meet for a week-long programme starting Monday to discuss various health-related issues such as battling pandemic-like threats, universal health coverage, and addressing mental health issues through primary care. The 75th Regional Committee Session of WHO South-East Asia, the annual governing body meeting of the World Health Organization in the region, being hosted by Bhutan this year, will be held from September 5 to 9. Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director for WHO South-East Asia, officials from WHO headquarters, senior officials from health ministries of member countries, representatives of UN agencies, partners, donors, and members of civil society, will be participating in the meeting, a WHO statement said.
