The CBI has started investigation against 14 state medical councils and 73 foreign medical graduates who were allowed to practise medicine in India without qualifying mandatory Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), officials said Monday. According to norms, a foreign medical graduate must qualify FMGE/Screening Test conducted by the National Board of Examination in order to get provisional or permanent registration with National Medical Commission or a state medical council to practise medicine in India. The CBI has registered a case of alleged corruption, criminal conspiracy, forgery and cheating against unidentified officials of state medical councils, erstwhile Medical Council of India, and 73 foreign medical graduates, the officials said. The National Board of Examination had intimated the Ministry of Health that 73 such medical graduates who did their MBBS from foreign countries such as Russia, Ukraine, China, and Nigeria during 2011-22 have not qualified its examination
The Delhi government will provide 450 types of medical tests free of cost at its hospitals and health centres from January 1, sources said on Tuesday. The number of medical tests provided free of cost by the Delhi government at present is 212, they said. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has given nod to a health department proposal for making 238 more tests free of cost at hospitals and Mohalla Clinics, the sources in the government said. The facility will be available to the people of Delhi, they said.

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, lodged in Patiala central jail, was admitted to Chandigarh's PGIMER on Monday afternoon, sources said. Sidhu underwent medical examination at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research's Hepatology department, hospital sources said. In the afternoon, Sidhu was admitted to the PGIMER where he had been brought under heavy security from Patiala prison. More tests were expected to be conducted, sources said. The former Punjab Congress chief on May 20 was sent to Patiala central jail after he surrendered before a local court. He has been sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court in a 1988 road rage death case. About two weeks back, Sidhu was taken to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala for medical examination. The cricketer-turned-politician's counsel HPS Verma had recently said Sidhu had sought a special diet in jail. According to the counsel, Sidhu cannot consume wheat, sugar, 'maida' and some other food items.
