IndiGo plans flights to Nairobi, Jakarta, central Asian destinations: CEO

The country's largest airline IndiGo, which is "back with a bang", is looking to start flights to Nairobi, Jakarta and some central Asian destinations as the carrier focuses on internationalisation, according to its chief Pieter Elbers. Amid intensifying competition and Air India set for expansion with massive plane orders, the IndiGo chief asserted that there is a lot of growth ahead in the Indian market that "justifies multiple airlines". "There is a lot going on in the Indian aviation landscape... The fact that Indian aviation is getting into the next stage, including the consolidation being done under the Air India group, is a natural evolution of the market. "I look to the competition. It is good to have competition but it will be a competition that is going hand-in-hand with the growth of the market," Elbers told PTI in an interview here. BJP member Tejasvi Surya had accidentally opened the emergency door of an IndiGo aircraft last month and the airline did not find the passenger in violation of any rule, according to the civil aviation ministry. Surya, the ruling BJP's Bengaluru South MP, has been facing flak from Congress over the incident, which happened on December 10 last year at Chennai airport. An IndiGo flight from Madurai to Delhi was diverted to the Indore airport after a 60-year-old passenger's health deteriorated mid-air on Saturday evening, a senior official said. IndiGo fleet size grows to 300 aircraft to manage growing passenger volume

No-frills carrier IndiGo on Friday said its fleet size has grown to 300 aircraft, which will help it cater to the growing passenger volume amid the recovery in travel demand and growth in 2023. Besides operating Airbus A320 NEO and A320 CEO aircraft along with A321 Neo, the Gurugram-based airline's fleet also has regional jets ATR 72-600. The airline offers 180 seats on its A320 CEO fleet while its A320 NEO planes are 180 and 186 seaters. The seating capacity on the A321 fleet is 222/232 and ATR fleet offers 78 seats, IndiGo said in a statement. "Our fleet size now stands at 300 aircraft, giving wings to our ambitions. We have recently expanded operations across west, east, and north-east India as well as the middle east. IndiGo aircraft suffers tail strike while landing in Kolkata; no injuries

IndiGo on Wednesday said one of its Airbus A321 aircraft suffered a tail strike while landing at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. The incident took place on Monday as the aircraft, with flight number 6E1859, was coming to Kolkata from Dhaka. "The aircraft was declared grounded at Kolkata for assessment and repairs. The incident is being investigated in detail," IndiGo said in a statement. No injuries, however, were reported, the airlines said. There were 173 passengers on board the flight at the time of the incident, sources at the Kolkata airport said. A tail strike occurs when the tail or empennage of an aircraft hits the ground or any other stationary object during take-off or landing.
