ISL-7: Cole's goal gives Odisha FC point against NorthEast United

Odisha FC and NorthEast United played out a 2-2 draw in an Indian Super League (ISL) match at the GMC Stadium here on Tuesday. Odisha took the lead through Diego Mauricio (26') before Benjamin Lambot (45+1') drew parity. Kwesi Appiah (65') then converted a penalty to put the Highlanders ahead but soon saw his goal cancelled out by Cole Alexander (67'). Odisha named an unchanged XI from the side that lost to Bengaluru FC while NorthEast coach Gerard Nus rang in four changes with Federico Gallego handed a start. The first half saw a cagey contest with both sides heading into the break level after creating plenty of chances. The first big chance of the game arrived during the 10th minute but Odisha keeper Arshdeep Singh produced a fine save to deny an opener for the Highlanders. Gallego picked up Kwesi Appiah with a long ball, and the latter made space for himself between two markers but saw his shot blocked by Arshdeep. Minutes later, Odisha carved out a great chance at the other e

ISL-7: Jamshedpur FC keen to extend unbeaten run against FC Goa

Jamshedpur FC would look to extend their six-match unbeaten run when they take on a struggling FC Goa in the Indian Super League at the Tilak Maidan, here on Wednesday. After their opening-day defeat against Chennaiyin FC, Owen Coyle's men have put up a strong fight and have managed to remain unbeaten in their last six games. They have conceded just one goal in last three matches, keeping two clean sheets and are placed fifth with 10 points. And coach Coyle is delighted with the work ethic and attitude his squad has shown so far. "Every game, the boys have been stronger. We have tried to look into areas, we had to address. And the boys have responded. When you have a group like that, you can achieve good results," he said. The match will see a clash between the two top scorers of the ongoing season -- Igor Angulo (Goa) and Nerijus Valskis (Jamshedour) -- who are tied on six goals apiece. Both the players are crucial for their respective sides. Both Angulo and Valskis have scored

ISL 7: Odisha FC seek maiden win, NorthEast United look to bounce back

With only a point in their kitty from six games, Odisha FC will be desperate to turn their fortunes around when they face NorthEast United in the Indian Super League here on Tuesday. The Bhubaneswar-based side is lying at the bottom of the table having suffered five defeats this season -- the most in the league. They will face stiff challenge from fourth-placed NorthEast, who will be aiming to bounce back after witnessing their unbeaten run end in the previous game. Odisha will need to find form soon, having struggled in both attack and defense. They have shipped in nine goals, the second-worst tally in the league, and have a tendency of conceding first -- seven of the goals scored against them came in the first half. In attack, Stuart Baxter's men have scored the joint-lowest goals (3) and created the least number of chances (42). Odisha will need to ensure they don't let the momentum slip again in the first half by conceding first. To do that, they will have to keep a tight leash

ISL-7: ATK Mohun Bagan aim to end Bengaluru FC's unbeaten run

An absorbing contest is on the cards when two in-form teams ATK Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC clash each other in the Indian Super League, here on Monday. While ATKMB boast of a strong attacking line-up, they have even better defensive statistics. Bengaluru's figures aren't bad either. They are yet to taste a defeat in the campaign. Though aware of the challenge that awaits for his side, ATKMB coach Antonio Habas has his sights set on nothing less than three points. "I think it's impossible to win every match. The teams are more balanced and it's very difficult for all teams to keep on winning three points," said Habas. "The idea in football is to get three points. I cannot play thinking about the possibility of drawing or losing." ATKMB's defenders have the most number of tackles in the league (233) and have also made the second-most clearances in the league (182). "The idea is marking in the zone and closing down the spaces. You need space for crosses and to create moves. The id

ISL-7: Mumbai City inflict first defeat of season on Hyderabad FC

Vignesh Dakshinamurthy pulled off a stunning goal to set up Mumbai City FC's 2-0 win over Hyderabad FC in an Indian Super League match here on Sunday. In a match where both sides struggle to create clear-cut chances, Vignesh's acrobatic 38th-minute strike stood out as a genuine quality moment. Adam Le Fondre put Sergio Lobera's men further ahead in the 59th minute as Hyderabad tasted their first defeat of the season. The caginess that marked much of the game was evident from the fact that Vignesh's goal was the only shot on target in the first half. With Hugo Boumous missing yet again, Mumbai City's creative struggles that plagued them in their last match against Jamshedpur, continued on Sunday as well. They had the better of Hyderabad in all departments of the game in the first half -- dominated possession, peppered the opposition box with crosses and completed a many more passes. But for the longest time, it looked like a goal would not come. Whatever questions Mumbai City pose

Kerala's stoppage time goal salvages 1-1 draw, prolongs East Bengal's wait

SC East Bengal's agonising wait for their first ever Indian Super League victory continued after conceding a stoppage time goal to be held 1-1 by Kerala Blasters FC at the GMC Stadium here on Sunday. In a battle between two winless teams, Bakary Kone's own goal gave SCEB a 16th minute lead. The Kolkata giants nearly secured their maiden ISL win from six matches but there was drama and heart break in store for the Robbie Fowler-coached side when it conceded the equaliser with less a minute left before the final whistle. The 19-year-old Jeakson Singh headed the ball out of Debjit Majumder's reach from a fantastic cross by Abdul Samad as the goal was an effort by two promising Indian substitutes who came in at the break to manage a rescue act for the Kibu Vicuna-coached side. The result meant both teams remained winless after six matches but SC East Bengal (two points) managed to came out of bottom, overtaking Odisha FC on goal difference in the 11-team standings. With one point from the match, the Highlanders are placed joint second with ATK Mohun Bagan on 10 points while Chennaiyin have now failed to pick up a win in their last four matches. NorthEast United made three changes to their side as Idrissa Sylla started upfront ahead of Kwesi Appiah. Chennaiyin made two changes to their line-up with Anirudh Thapa among the substitutes. NorthEast keeper Gurmeet Singh was called into action early on as Chennaiyin created a chance in the first minute. Lallianzuala Chhangte received a long ball from Jakub Sylvestr in the box but his shot was parried away by Gurmeet. Five minutes later, Edwin Vanspaul had another opportunity to put Chennaiyin ahead. ISL 7: Hyderabad FC hold ATK Mohun Bagan 1-1, maintain unbeaten run

Hyderabad FC rode on Joao Victor's second half penalty to hold ATK Mohun Bagan to a 1-1 draw, maintaining their unbeaten run in the Indian Super League, here on Friday. The duo of Roy Krishna and Manvir Singh looked threatening up front but missed a flurry of chances, while veteran Subrata Pal pulled off some fine saves under the Hyderabad post to keep a clean score-sheet in the first-half. Manvir finally broke the deadlock in the 54th minute capitalising on a defensive lapse by Odei Onaindia. But the Mariners' joy lasted just over 10 minutes as they conceded a soft penalty after Nikhil Poojary was brought down by Manvir with a faint touch. The result meant ATK Mohun Bagan failed to get a win from two matches to remain on second spot with 10 points from five matches. ATKMB had lost to Jamshedpur FC in their last match. Pl

10-man SC East Bengal hold Jamshedpur, pocket first point after 3 losses

SC East Bengal held a wasteful Jamshedpur FC for a goalless draw to secure their first point of the Indian Super League at the Tilak Maidan Stadium, here on Thursday. SCEB's Eugeneson Lyngdoh was given the marching orders following a second yellow card in the 25th minute but their defence led by Hero-of-the-Match Mohammed Irshad stayed compact and foiled every attempt of the Red Miners. After three losses on the trot, laggards SCEB finally opened their account as they now have one point from four matches, while JFC moved to fifth place with six points from five games. SCEB coach Robbie Fowler criticised the referee's decision for the second yellow on Lyngdoh and said the "standard needs to improve". "I tried speaking to the official but they simply didn't listen. It's ridiculous. The standard of refereeing needs to improve. We felt as if we were playing against 12 players," the Liverpool legend said at the post-match interaction. He, however, seemed happy to have secured a point.
