Jaishankar takes on Rahul Gandhi; objects to use of term 'pitai' for jawans

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday strongly objected to the use of the term "pitai" (beating) by former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi while referring to the India-China clash in Tawang, and asserted that our soldiers have stood their ground in Yangtse in Arunachal Pradesh and should be "appreciated and honoured". There is no problem with political criticism of the government's actions, Jaishankar said, but objected to "direct or indirect" criticism of the soldiers guarding the country's frontiers. His remarks during the debate on the Anti Maritime Piracy Bill in the Lok Sabha were in response to Gandhi's allegations in Jaipur last week that China had taken away 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory, killed 20 Indian soldiers, and was "beating our jawans in Arunachal Pradesh". "The word 'pitai' (beating) should not be used for our jawans. Our jawans are standing their ground. They should be respected, they should be honoured, and they should be appreciated. This is

Indian Army remains prepared for all military contingencies: Govt

The Indian Army remains prepared for all military contingencies emanating out of the "collusive threat" from the military modernisation and aggressive actions by India's adversaries, the Defence Ministry said on Saturday, in an apparent reference to China and its all-weather ally Pakistan. It also said the Army is primarily focused on maintaining its operational preparedness in sync with India's desire to ensure stability and dominance along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), and Line of Control (LoC) while constantly monitoring and reviewing emerging threats to national security. The Defence Ministry mentioned this in a year-end review. Referring to the situation along the LoC (with Pakistan), it said the situation has been relatively peaceful with both Indian and Pakistani armies observing ceasefire understanding since February last year. "As compared to 4,645 ceasefire violations during its peak in 2020, only three minor incidents have been recorded since the understanding in ...

The former Congress chief alleged on Friday that China is preparing for a war while the Indian government is asleep and trying to ignore the threat. He also alleged that China has taken away 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory, killed 20 Indian soldiers and is "beating up our jawans in Arunachal Pradesh". "By giving an immature statement, Rahul Gandhi has once again showed that he has nothing to do with the country and country's sentiments," Khattar said in a tweet in Hindi. Khattar further said, "At a time when our soldiers are giving a strong and effective reply to China, this remark of Rahul Gandhi is a statement to break the morale of the army and the entire country".
