Will push for early India-EU FTA under our presidency, says Sweden

Weeks before Sweden takes over the presidency of European Union, Swedish foreign trade minister Johan Forssell on Friday said pushing for an early finalisation of the India-EU free trade agreement will be one of the key priorities of his country's year-long tenure at the 27-nation. He said Sweden will act as an "honest broker" and do its best to conclude the negotiations for the FTA as it will be in "everyone's interest". The minister described India's procurement of crude oil from Russia amid the Ukraine conflict as part of domestic policies, saying every country must make their own decisions. "I have not come here to tell you what to do. The war has affected Europe in many ways, especially in the energy situation. Every country must make their own decisions and I totally agree with Prime Minister [Narendra] Modi saying that this is no time for war," he said while interacting with a group of journalists. "We very much hope for the war to end and hopefully very soon because there a

Nation must know how dependent it has become on those with hostile interest

Commerce minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said India has become dependent on a country which has "inimical interests" and it is important that it realises this. Replying to supplementaries during question hour in the Rajya Sabha, he said the high trade deficit of USD 48.5 billion in trade between India and China inherited in 2013-14 cannot be ignored and the government is now taking steps to promote domestic manufacturing sector. He said the India-China trade in 2000-2001 was barely USD 2 billion and that position continued till 2002-03 where it increased at best to about USD 5 Billion. "At that time the trade deficit was just about USD 1 billion. I don't know what happened after that, but suddenly after 2003-04 the USD 1 billion trade defict over the next ten years increased to USD 36 billion in ten years," he told the house. The entire country, he claimed, became a large marketplace inviting sub-standard, opaquely priced, non-transparent valued goods into the country in a big ...

India to provide voice to issues of interest during G20 presidency: Govt

India's endeavour during its G20 presidency would be to build consensus within the grouping, raise key issues of the global south and highlight the country's 3Ds -- development, democracy and diversity, the government informed Lok Sabha on Wednesday. In a statement in Lok Sabha on the latest developments in India's foreign policy, Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakashi Lekhi also said the country's advocacy of dialogue and diplomacy in the context of the Ukraine conflict has been "consistent and persistent". At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Samarkand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had voiced global sentiment when he declared that this was not an era of war, she said. "His (the PM's) statement was in the context of the Ukraine conflict, where our advocacy of dialogue and diplomacy has been consistent and persistent. It has a larger resonance as well. We have also extended support on specific concerns such as supply of food grains and fertilisers, as
