A total of 30 burn cases, eight of them in Ahmedabad alone, were reported in different parts of Gujarat on Diwali night, a rise of 400 per cent from normal days, the Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) said on Tuesday. Diwali was celebrated across Gujarat on Monday in an environment free of coronavirus-related curbs after two years with people bursting firecrackers to mark the festival of lights. "As against six burn cases reported on normal days, 30 cases related to burn injuries were reported on Diwali night on Monday, recording an increase of 400 per cent," Ahmedabad-based EMRI said in a statement. However, the institute did not disclose the cause of burn injuries. The institute operates '108' free ambulance service across Gujarat in partnership with the state government. Gujarat on Monday recorded 42 new cases of coronavirus, raising the tally of infections to 12,76,573, an official from the state health department said. At least 49 patients recovered from the infection during the day, taking the count of recoveries to 12,64,944, while the toll remained unchanged at 11,038, he said. With this, the state currently has 591 active cases, of which three patients are on ventilator support, the official said. Of the latest cases, Ahmedabad reported the highest number of 15 infections, followed by Surat with 10, Sabarkantha and Vadodara five cases each and Jamnagar two, among others, he said. The state has administered 12.74 crore COVID-19 vaccine jabs so far, the official said. No fines will be collected from from traffic rules violators till October 27 in view of Diwali festivities, the Gujarat government has announced. The decision was taken so that people's "Diwali is not spoiled," said Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi. The Expert Appraisal Committee under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has recommended Environmental Clearance for the Rs 10,000 crore expansion and debottlenecking of Reliance Industries Ltd's Hazira Manufacturing Division (HMD) in Gujarat.
