Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday suggested training tourist guides and designated police personnel in multiple foreign languages and developing a multilingual app to make tourists visiting India feel at ease. In his address at the opening session of a day-long national conference on tourist police, attended by top officers of various states and Union Territories, he asserted that efforts should be made so that not a single crime happened against any tourist. "Many foreign tourists, especially those in the age bracket of 50s and 60s, wish to speak in their own language. So it is important to be multilingual as per the needs of the tourists and our policy should factor in that aspect," Birla said. 25% extra seats to be created for foreign students, HEIs: UGC guidelines

Higher educational institutions across the country will now be allowed to create up to 25 per cent supernumerary seats for foreign students and will have to adopt a transparent admission process for them, the University Grants Commission (UGC) said on Friday. The draft "Guidelines for Admission and Supernumerary seats of International Students in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes in Higher Educational Institutions in India" were put in public domain last month for seeking feedback and have been notified now. "HEIs may create up to 25 pc supernumerary seats for international students, over and above of their total sanctioned enrolment for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The decision regarding supernumerary seats has to be carried out by the concerned higher educational institutions as per specific guidelines and regulations issued by the regulatory bodies considering the infrastructure, faculty and other requirements," the guidelines said. 83% Indian students believe foreign degrees land them better jobs: Study

Nearly 83 per cent of Indian students believe an overseas degree will enhance their prospects of securing better jobs and provide an edge over competition, according to a study. The Leap-Ipsos Strategy Study Abroad Outlook Report unveiled on Tuesday said 57 per cent of Indian middle class households -- income between Rs 3 and Rs 10 lakh -- are inclined towards spending on overseas education. The report gives a critical insight of how foreign education is becoming popular with this segment, the largest of the Indian population. Over 260,000 overseas students arrived in Australia till July 22: Official

Over 2.60 lakh students have arrived in Australia to take up higher education soon after the country opened its borders following the impact caused by COVID-19 enforced lockdown, an official said on Saturday. Australia has unveiled the Study Australia Industry Experience Programme for Indian students aimed at enhancing the employability skills, Australian Trade and Investment Commissioner-South Asia Abdul Ekram said. The Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) conducted its one-day road show here recently on 'Study Australia' to provide information on studying in Australia, interacting with university representatives, and provided information on visas and scholarships that are available for overseas students. Universities and higher education institutions across the country will now be allowed to create up to 25 per cent supernumerary seats for foreign students in their undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes, UGC chairman Jagadesh Kumar has told PTI. There will be no entrance tests for these admissions, Kumar said, adding that the decision was taken at a meeting of the University Grants Commission (UGC) held last week to discuss "internationalisation of UG and PG programmes in India."
