India is the most significant country for Meta in terms of all the new things that feature across its platforms -- Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, a top company official said. Meta agrees to sell Giphy, ending battle with UK regulators

Facebook parent Meta said Tuesday that it will sell off Giphy after running out of options to thwart a ruling by UK regulators, who again found that the deal to buy the GIF-sharing platform would limit competition and innovation. Britain's competition watchdog had ordered Meta last year to reverse the deal a year after it was announced but the company appealed to a tribunal, which rejected most of its arguments. After reviewing the case further, the Competition and Markets Authority concluded that the only way to avoid the significant impact the deal would have on competition is for Meta to sell Giphy to an approved buyer. We are disappointed by the CMA's decision but accept today's ruling as the final word on the matter. We will work closely with the CMA on divesting GIPHY," Meta said in a statement. "We will continue to evaluate opportunities including through acquisition to bring innovation and choice to more people in the UK and around the world. New York-based Giphy's libr

It's hard for Meta's virtual-reality avatars to have legs, says Zuckerberg

Why is it so hard to build a metaverse avatar a visual representation of ourselves in the digital world that walks on two legs? I think everyone has been waiting for this," said a cartoonish digital version of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, unveiling his new avatar legs and jumping up and down at a virtual-reality event Tuesday. "But seriously, legs are hard. Which is why other virtual reality systems don't have them either. Early avatar models introduced by Meta, as well as Microsoft, have been ridiculed for appearing as legless, waist-up bodies floating around their virtual worlds. That's in part because tech companies have been eager to show off their progress in building out virtual-reality environments while still working on the technical challenges of making avatars more human-like and realistic. Meta renamed itself from Facebook last year in hopes of jumpstarting its corporate transformation into a provider of metaverse experiences for work and play. Zuckerberg described legs a
