Electricity supply restored in Bangladesh after blackout from grid failure

Electricity supply across Bangladesh has been restored after the South Asian country plunged into a blackout following the failure of its national power grid, officials said. The blackout, which impacted much of the country, started at 2.05 pm on Tuesday and lasted for nearly seven hours before power was completely restored at 9 p.m. It was not immediately clear what caused the glitch. Many large shopping malls in the capital, Dhaka, closed early on Tuesday evening. Elsewhere, people gathered at fuel stations to collect diesel to run standby generators and market vendors operated amid candlelight. Nasul Hamid, junior minister for power, energy and mineral resources, said in a statement that he regretted the temporary inconvenience caused by the power failure. Power discoms seek clarification from Delhi govt on disbursal of subsidy

Power discoms have sought clarification from the Delhi government on the disbursal of subsidy to consumers considering their different billing cycles, sources said on Wednesday. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal earlier this month said that subsidy will be given to only those consumers who will demand it. He said that consumers who apply for subsidy up to October 31 will be provided subsidy for the month of October. However, sources said that discoms do not follow month-wise billing cycles. "The billing of power consumption starts from the date a new connection is energised. So it is different for consumers. Supposedly, if a consumer starts consumption of power after getting connection from 25th of a month, his bill will be generated for a period up to 25th of next month," said a source. Kejriwal had said that those consumers who do not apply for subsidy will not get it. However, they will start getting it if they apply for it again, he said. According to official figures, there are

Sardar Sarovar dam's hydropower output nearly doubles this year

Good rainfall in the catchment area of the Sardar Sarovar dam in Gujarat's Narmada district has led to the generation of 2,142 million units (MUs) of hydropower so far this year, nearly double as compared to the corresponding period last year. The month of August has contributed the most to it, the official data has shown. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), both Gujarat and neighbouring Madhya Pradesh have received excess rainfall this monsoon season. Of the Narmada river's total basin area of 97,410 sq km, a total of 85,858 sq km area lies in Madhya Pradesh and 9,894 sq km in Gujarat. From the River Bed Power House (RBPH) turbines at the dam located in Kevadia, 2,142 MUs of electricity was produced till September 20 this year as compared to 1,129 MUs units till September end in 2021, the data shared by the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) said. RBPH's installed capacity is 1,200 MW. Of the 2,142 MUs, a total of 1,849 MUs were generated in the monsoon .

Coal stock at electricity generating plants rises to about 30 MT: CIL

Coal stocks at power generating plants rose to about 30 million tonnes last month, state-run Coal India said on Thursday, dispelling fears of shortages of dry-fuel during the monsoon season. The government has been making all efforts to build up coal stocks to avoid the reoccurrence of power outages seen during the summer this year. "...coal stock at power plants is close to 30 MTs, including imported coal, ending August 22 (till 29th). This is substantially higher than 12.8 MTs of August '21 when the stock plummeted by 11.2 MTs in a month," Coal India Ltd (CIL) said in a statement. The PSU said that enhanced supply of fuel from CIL helped the stock stabilise at power houses. "Closing stock for the month of August'22 is a six-year high barring 2020 when pandemic fuelled slowdown saw the stock at 37.7 MT," it said. Andhra Pradesh government says it doesn't owe any money to power gencos

The Andhra Pradesh government on Friday maintained that it owed no money to the power generators for electricity purchased through the power exchanges. Power System Operation Corporation Ltd (POSOCO), a Government of India enterprise, has asked three power exchanges -- IEX, PXIL and HPX -- to restrict electricity trading by 27 discoms in 13 states having outstanding dues towards gencos. AP Special Chief Secretary (Energy) K Vijayanand clarified here on Friday that the state power distribution companies did not owe any money to the gencos. "We have cleared all the Rs 350 crore due.
