In a watershed event for the AIADMK, the party on Tuesday elevated Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) as its supreme leader, the general secretary, moments after deposed leader O Panneerselvam (OPS) lost one more legal battle against his expulsion from the party. While the Madras High Court rejected pleas of Panneerselvam and his aides against their expulsion from AIADMK, 68-year old Palaniswami for the first time became the general secretary after the post's revival last year. Before his elevation, EPS was the interim general secretary. Party founder-leader M G Ramachandran (MGR), former party supremo J Jayalalithaa, Navalar VR Nedunchezhiyan, P U Shanmugam and S Raghavanandam were the only other leaders who had held that top post in the AIADMK, which was founded in 1972. On being elevated, cadres gave Palaniswami a rousing welcome and made him wear a dark glass and bright white cap just like MGR and he happily waved at cadres, seen as a gesture of bringing the party under his full ...
AIADMK interim chief Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) on Saturday filed nomination for election to the party's powerful General Secretary post, setting the ball rolling for his ultimate elevation, as rival leader O Panneerselvan slammed the "pickpocket-like" approach of the EPS camp in holding the polls, alleging due party process was not followed. EPS, as Palaniswami is addressed, filed his nomination at the party headquarters, nearly a month after the Supreme Court greenflagged his continuance as the AIADMK interim chief, dealing a blow to Pannerselvam (OPS) in his running feud with his rival over the leadership issue. The OPS camp decried the election process and senior party leader Panruti S Ramachandran said they will move the court over the issue, even as Panneerselvam indicated he will meet the people on the matter. A large conference will be held in Tiruchirappalli early April as part of the next course of action, he added. Within hours of Palaniswami filing the nomination, ...
Pandian in the petition before the court wanted an injunction against the functioning of EPS as the interim general secretary of the party
The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a Madras High Court order allowing K Palaniswami to continue as interim general secretary of the AIADMK, establishing his position as the single, supreme leader of the party. A bench of Justices Dinesh Maheswari and Hrishikesh Roy, which had reserved judgement on the matter on January 12, dismissed the petitions filed by O Panneerselvam. We have upheld the order of the Division Bench of the High Court dated September 2, 2022 and made our earlier interim order permanent. "We have not dealt with the matter of resolutions before the party that were being heard by the single judge. We leave it open for the said resolutions to be dealt with in accordance in law, the bench said. The judgement came on batch of pleas concerning amendments made to party bylaws during the July 11, 2022 general council meeting, which elected Palaniswami, or EPS as he is known, as its single leader while expelling his rival Panneerselvam and some of his aides. Taking an exception to the reported comments, the AIADMK leadership spoke tough about its alliance partner
AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) on Friday described the Madras High Court's ruling, that has in effect endorsed his election in July as party's interim chief, as 'historic.' Rival leader O Panneerselvam said the High Court verdict would be challenged in the Supreme Court. As the court delivered its judgment, AIADMK workers burst crackers, distributed sweets and thronged Palaniswami's residence to greet him. Without naming Panneerselvam or his supporters, EPS hit out at "mischievous self-centred" persons". Further, slamming them as "diseases that kill from within", EPS said they were working in support of ruling DMK while the party was slogging to guard the people from the DMK regime's "unruliness". Such elements were a hindrance to AIADMK's whole-hearted work aimed at the welfare of people and party workers, Palaniswami said. "I happily welcome the Madras High Court Division Bench's verdict," EPS said in a statement. He thanked all the party workers and functionaries w
AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam on Thursday extended an olive branch to his rival, "dear brother" Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) to run the party jointly and said "let bygones be bygones" but the latter ruled out any association with OPS and even blamed him for the party's defeat in the 2021 Assembly polls which the DMK-led bloc swept. Incidentally, Pannerselvam's call for unity also pertained to deposed AIADMK leader VK Sasikala and her nephew TTV Dhinakaran. Palaniswami rejected Panneerselvam's call for joining hands and listed out a series of reasons, including alleging OPS was behind the attack on the party headquarters here last month. He flayed his rival for seeking "posts without efforts". Palaniswami also moved the Madras High Court against a single judge order on Wednesday which declared as not valid the AIADMK General Council resolutions of July 11, which among others, 'expelled' Panneerselvam and picked EPS as the party's interim general secretary. A day after securing the H
