2 leopard cubs seen in Asola as wildlife thrives in Delhi's urban jungles

Two leopard cubs were spotted in the Asola Bhatti Sanctuary recently in a fresh example of how bold efforts of conservationists and the forest and wildlife department can help several wildlife species recover in the urban jungles. Forest department officials Wednesday said the two cubs were caught on a camera trap a few days ago. A video shared by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) on its Instagram page showed a leopard cub emerging from a burrow inside the sanctuary. Since mother felines do not travel long distances with newborns, the officials believe the sanctuary is their birthplace. An official said this is first time that a cub leopard has been spotted in the jungles of Asola since leopard sightings began a few years ago. The wildlife department and the BHNS had released a study in October, confirming the presence of eight leopards in the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, with enough evidence to suggest the large carnivore is making the urban forest its permanent home.

Delhi govt's GST collection increases 22% to Rs 41,351 cr in Apr-Dec

The Delhi government's goods and services tax (GST) collection increased 22 per cent to Rs 41,351 crore for the first three quarters (April-December) this fiscal, officials said on Tuesday. In 2021-22, the government's GST collection in the first three quarters was recorded at Rs 33,691 crore. The tax collection of the Delhi government plummeted during the last two fiscals due to interruptions of the COVID pandemic. "There was a negative growth in tax collection in 2020-21 due to the lockdown. Next year (2021-22), the situation improved and this year collections are good as economic activities have revived," one of the officials said. The Delhi government has projected a total receipt of Rs 47,700 crore as tax revenue in its budget for 2022-23. With the average monthly collection now hovering around Rs 4,500 to Rs 4,600, officials said an increase of 15-20 per cent in revenue collection than the estimated amount is expected by the end of the financial year.

Some commuters took to Twitter to share photos of jams, while many travelling on the route, during the peak hours, claimed they spent around half an hour to cross the section. There is heavy traffic in the area, the officials said and added that several people called police to report jams. The traffic police had earlier advised people to park only at designated places and plan their journeys, especially if they were going to hospitals, bus terminals, railway stations and airports, owing to the flyover's closure. Traffic coming from the Outer Ring Road, both sides of the carriageways passing through the Ashram Chowk, DND flyover, Mathura road and Noida bore the brunt. "From January 1, both the carriageways of the Ashram flyover will be closed due to the construction of a connecting road between the Ashram flyover and new DN
