No major relief from heatwave in Delhi till June 16, says weather office

Parts of Delhi recorded a heatwave for a seventh consecutive day on Thursday, even as the India Meteorological Department said no major relief is likely till June 16. The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi's base station, recorded a maximum temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal. Three out of the 11 weather stations in Delhi recorded a heatwave on Thursday. The maximum temperature settled at 46.8 degrees Celsius at Mungeshpur, making it the hottest place in the city. Pitampura, Najafgarh and Ridge stations recorded a high of 45.3 degrees Celsius, 45.4 degrees Celsius and 45.2 degrees Celsius, respectively. Weather experts said the maximum temperature in Delhi-NCR will come down by a few notches over the weekend but no major relief is likely till June 15. They said moisture-laden easterly winds will bring significant relief in the region from June 16 onwards. Mundka fire: Families of victims perform last rites; 16 bodies unidentified

The family of Madhu Devi, a victim of the Mundka fire, finally performed her last rites on Wednesday, almost a month after the incident that claimed lives of 27 people. Madhu's husband Amit Kumar said that the last few weeks had been nothing less than a nightmare. "We knew she is no more. But as her body was not identified, we had a small hope," he said. Madhu was among the three victims whose bodies were identified on Tuesday. So far, 11 of the 27 bodies have been identified and handed over to their family members. Madhu is survived by her husband and two pre-teen daughters. "We had our wedding anniversary on May 20. As she is no more, who will take care of our children?" Amit asked. Over 15% jump in waste dumping into Delhi's landfills in a year: Govt data

Delhi has registered a jump of around 15 per cent in the quantity of waste being dumped into its three landfill sites as compared to last year, according to government data. According to reports submitted to the Union Jal Shakti Ministry and the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi generated 10,990 tonnes per day (TPD) of municipal solid waste (MSW) in April 2021 on an average. Of this, 5,457 TPD (49.65 per cent) was processed at MSW processing facilities and 5,533 (50.35 per cent) ended up in landfill sites at Bhalswa, Ghazipur and Okhla. The MSW generation increased to 11,293 TPD by April this year, of which only 4,929 TPD (43.6 per cent) was processed, recycled or turned into compost. The remaining (6,366 TPD) ended up in landfills, an increase of over 15 per cent in a year. Three waste-to-energy (WTE) plants, one each at Bhalswa, Okhla and Ghazipur, operational in the city can utilise up to 4,550 TPD of waste for electricity generation.
